Hi trix, and welcome to CacheWalker, and Geocaching! 

Yes, patience is sometimes what it takes with Geocaching, but on some easier caches you need far less, if any, so perhaps you should stick to those whilst you do get practice, and then indeed you will get there 
Tips to avoid a very long search is to check the cache's Difficulty/Terrain rating before leaving  (lower the better!) and make sure the cache doesn't have strings of DNFs (did not finds), so that you don't join that list!  - hope that helps!

Feel free to join in wherever you like on the forum, it's been a bit quiet lately with all the warm weather, but it'll pick up - it does get very busy at times on here    Would be great if you could make it to one of our events too!

After a few years of caching I can look straight at a cache and still not see it. Don't let me put you off though, I am sure you'll get good at it and aquire more finds than me in no time

Here's my penny's worth:

It's worth reading previous logs of a cache you are about to find, as these sometimes indicate that there may be an issue or someone has put it back in the wrong place or even gives more information about its hide location. I tend to glance at these to check it has been recently found. If I then have a problem finding the cache, I then read the logs properly as there may be spoilers (hints) in the logs.

Also check the size of the cache so you know what sort of sized container you are looking for, micros & other (these can be custom made containers or some cachers use this for a nano sized cache about the size of a small acorn) can be very difficult due to their size and I presume you have access to the hint while out caching if you fail to find after your initial search.

Thanks, Walk Tall, for the advice.  I must admit that when I first went haring off to find one I expected to see something fairly big, I don't mean huge but detectable    I have a friend who lives abroad and he is a keen geo-cacher so I sent him an email, when he sent the reply and explained the size of the thing I was looking for I laughed to myself.  Admittedly I did find those.  It is just trial and error isn't it.  At least it gets me out walking, although not in this heat.
