Two new members introducing ourselves
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:27:23 am »
Hi
I am Keith Gould and my wife Kathy (kathy5beads) have just joined.

We live in Cheltenham and have been caching for a couple of months. We are both registered disabled and we use our off-road mobility scooters to get about. We are both still active but have difficulties walking anything more than about fifty yards. I retired officially last September and we try to get away in our Motorhome, with our Golden Retriever, for at least a couple of days every month when we can (depending on health and financies).

We enjoy hunting for caches but we are restricted in where we can go on our scooters. Footpaths and tracks are no problem neither are most fields, but we are stymied when we come across stiles and kissing gates (trying to get a 120kg scooter over a stile is a bit of a problem. Even more so when there are two of them to carry).

We would possibly be interested in any events that you think would be suitable for us.

Welcome to CacheWalker :D

That was a good introduction about yourselves. I have a lighter problem than yourselves, as my 36kg greyhound doesn't do stiles :o

Hi Keith and Kathy, welcome to CacheWalker :)

I remember the Top Gear episode where they were testing off-road mobility scooters against ones they had made themselves, that was quite a fun episode. But come to think about it, I might be wrong but I don't remember seeing them come across any stiles or kissing gates whilst they did their race through the countryside. It would of been interesting to see how they dealt with those  :D

Afternoon Keith & Kathy.

Welcome to the hobby/obsession!

You might find

of some use.

I know that a cacher by the name of Cache on Wheels (Heather?) uses a mobility scooter to cache.  If you can track her down she may be able to give you some helpful pointers and share her experiences with you.  Her GC.com profile (through which you can contact her) is at

I note you're based in Cheltenham.  Mzeb0nga has a variety of what should be some easy to access August events in both Cheltenham & Gloucester, which he's bookmarked at http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=63fc3ba8-f4cd-4c00-81bf-cf0fd3aef208.

There are also some CITO (cache in, trash out) events coming up soon in the area, such as the ones in Hesters Way Park and also at a nearby nature reserve (

There are also semi-regular meets in the area, usually in pubs, such as this one -

I hope the above has been of some use/interest to you.

Happy caching!

Many thanks for the replies and information.
Hopefully when Kathy is feeling a bit better we will be able to follow up on some of them.
Regards
