General Caching / Lockdown from 5th Jan 2021
« on: January 04, 2021, 11:43:23 pm »
Updated 04/01/21 - England - National Lockdown

England - The UK Government on the 4th January 2021 announced new National Covid 19 Restrictions which will come into force 00:01 on the 5th January in England. In light of these new regulations, the UK Reviewing Team will suspend the publication of new caches in England from 00:01 5th January. This suspension will be reviewed when the Governments advice changes.

During this period we will also pause the cache reaping process in England. Caches that have a maintenance warning will not be actioned during this period.

There is no immediate need to disable caches, but it is of course up to each Cache Owner. We see no need to lock all caches. Please remember that it is against the Geocaching guidelines to allow a cache to be virtually logged e.g. by photo (unless a Virtual Cache). Allowing these types of logs is against the guidelines and may result in a cache being archived where it has been allowed. If you disable your caches, without removing them, you cannot delete logs if the logbook has been signed.

For further information on the English Coronavirus Guidelines, please visit the Government Website here.

Please continue to refer to this page for the latest Geocaching Publication updates during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

General Caching / Mystery at the Museum
« on: July 14, 2019, 01:33:57 pm »

Any one having a go at this latest souvenir hunt?

A slight twist with these, you need to complete each level, before you can see what caches have the next set of 'clues'.

Levels:
Find the detective to get briefed on the case - 1x cache to find
Investigate the scene - 6x caches to find
Find the stolen gems - 15x caches to find
Find the stolen jewels (gems) to learn how to access the vault

You can use the search option which now has the Mystery at the Museum filters, so you can find caches that have been tagged.

General Caching / Adventure Lab

I see the GAGB one has been posted on FB

The GAGB London Selfie Adventure

Quote
Welcome to the GAGB London Selfie Adventure cache. What is the GAGB? The GAGB is the Geocaching Association of Great Britain. It is a free to join association that strives to be the heart of the Geocaching in the UK. Our main activities are : Encourage good practice in Geocaching Media Enquiries around Geocaching Managing land owner agreements Help and advice around Geocaching Helping build the Geocaching community in the UK More information is available on our website here : http://www.gagb.org.uk/what-is-the-gagb.php or via Social Media. This adventure will take the player through a number of locations in the Central London area. All locations are wheelchair accessible and are perfect for taking that London Selfie. Each location will have a question that you have to answer. This proves that you were doing the selfie adventure and not sitting at home looking on Google Maps..

BUT, going to install the app, it appears (here we go again), the app has got a very poor rating: unstable, buggie, keeps asking for location, people having to reinstall, forgets you are logged in, etc  :'( :'( :'(

Has anyone tried any of the adventure labs?
And how do you find out if any have been published locally?

General Caching / AR (Augmented Reality) caches
« on: July 01, 2018, 10:01:30 pm »
I hadn't realised that Groundspeak are looking at other methods of finding caches using Augmented Reality apps to guide you there.

Quote
2.19. Augmented Reality (AR) and geocaching

From June 06th, 2018 to Sept 06th, 2018 you can submit a Mystery Cache for review that requires the finder to use an Augmented Reality (AR) app to find the cache. This is an experiment to see how the geocaching community will use AR technology. Any caches published within this experiment may be archived at a later date by Geocaching HQ if circumstances change.

At the end of this time period, Geocaching HQ will decide if the published caches will be grandfathered or archived.

I tried this cache AR_Geohound Hunt as a FTF and to try out this new AR approached. The AR worked it got me to GZ, I just couldn't find the cache :o :(

This is the only one I've tried and don't know what the capabilities are but it gave me co-ordinates which I put into my Garmin, once there I hit the Ready (got there) button, it asked a multi-choice question, I got it correct and it gave me the next co-ordinates to go to, I put them into my Garmin, etc, until it got you to the cache. That was it, the camera had gone into power save, so the Geohound (in this case) was just on a black background.

Anyone else tried one?

Here's a screen shot of Geohound with this post in the background  8)

General Caching / Changes to the placing of caches/events in the UK
« on: June 11, 2016, 10:56:31 am »
The UK reviewing team recently had a meeting where several topics were discussed. This has resulted in changes to various matters of cache placement and events in the UK as follows:

Placing of caches in Culverts, Mines, Adits, Caves and Underground Quarries.

There have been issues with disturbing bats which frequently roost in some of these locations. It was decided there would be no restrictions on placing caches in these locations but to avoid any issues cache owners would be asked to show they have permission from the relevant landowner.
Please note that caches in culverts under roads managed by Highways England and in culverts under railway lines (Network Rail) will not be allowed. Both these organisations have made this request and it's explained in the UK Geocaching Polices Wiki: Highways England - Network Rail.

Event stacking
This phrase refers to holding multiple events that are close to each other or at similar times. Events are social gatherings of geocachers and having too many too close to each other diminishes their value to the community. Events are not just an excuse to get a 'smiley'. In the future, if an event is submitted and another event is either already published or also waiting review and they are too close to each other then the following guidance will apply:
Events will be published within a similar time period only if they are more than 20 miles apart (as the crow flies). Events closer to each other than 20 miles will only be published if the end time of the first is more 10 hours before the start time of the next. In London which is a popular tourist destination and where many events get submitted it was decided the distance would be a 3 mile circle around Trafalgar Square rather than 20 miles. The time restriction of 10 hours will still apply. Anywhere else in London the 20 mile/10 hour guideance will apply.

Camping events
Camping is a very popular activity among geocachers and long weekend camping trips particularly so. It’s becoming common to have a lot of geocaching events during these 2 or 3 days. This does diminish the value of events as social gatherings as it's usually the same people attending each time. The event guidelines say this:

An event is a gathering of geocachers, facilitating the social aspect of geocaching. It is organized by geocachers and is open to other geocachers and those interested in learning about the game. It takes place at the posted coordinates, includes start and end times, and lasts at least 30 minutes. Events with several elements, a sequence of events, or events that are near the same time or location and intended for the same audience should be submitted as a single event.

Therefore in the future only one event will be allowed during a camping "long weekend". This event must be on a specific day with a start and finish time. If the camp site is closed to visitors; that is you can only get on the camp site if you are camping then this event must be open to all geocachers so needs to be held off the camp site.

General Caching / Groundspeak been tweaking again :(
« on: January 17, 2016, 11:09:11 am »
I noticed the alter email format has changed to a more spaced version, so you need to scroll to read it all, no great shakes but is it a slightly larger email now?

Also they have tweaked the Play menu and now changes depending where you are. So now when you go into your PQ's, the Play menu doesn't have PQ menu item listed, so you have to go back to your home screen to get back the PQ menu item in the Play menu  :o ???

Not very helpful if you are doing several PQ's :(

Off Topic / MS Windows sync - RANT warning!
« on: June 16, 2015, 09:53:12 pm »
Can you believe it:
  • With XP I could sync my calendar and contacts to my mobile with no issue at all ;D
  • I move to Windows 8 and sync just doesn't want to talk to my mobile - MS answer: buy a new mobile >:(
  • OK, my mobile is getting to end of life, so got a new shiny mobile and what do I find, things have moved on and now you can't sync directly with Outlook on my laptop but have to have your calender and contacts out in the Cloud  >:( >:( >:(
For f**ks sake, what happened to what the customer needs and uses - arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr >:(

I know I'm not alone in this, as I've been trying to find a way to do it and found others who are just gob smacked that this normal task seems to be very difficult, unless you have moved all your info into the Cloud.

I wonder if GCHQ (& the like) has anything to do with this, all that info in the Cloud for them to 'play' with ::)

PS I may have found a program to do it but it's not free :(

General Caching / Renewing Membership - not being ripped off!
« on: May 24, 2015, 09:45:37 pm »
It's that time of year for me, so searched round to find the non-UK (not being ripped off) way to pay.

This time I used Cachebox to buy a 12 Month Premium Membership for just £19.99  ;D

Not sure why GS feel just because you are outside the USA, you have to pay a Premium at £24.99 for the same thing :(
