Title: Markdown- new Geocaching logs

Today, you may notice some changes to geocache and trackable logs on Geocaching.com. In our continued effort to increase site security and promote cross-platform compatibility, we will be removing support for HTML and UBB code in logs in favor of Markdown. These codes are used to add emphasis to text such as bold or italic type, or to add links to websites. In addition to improving site security, moving to Markdown means that new logs will now consistently look good across all devices.

Please note that this change affects fewer than 3.5% of existing logs. To learn more about using Markdown and what this change means for your past logs, visit the Geocaching Help Center.

All my previous logs are affected! What do you think? Not so keen on the new log interface on the cache pages, but I guess I'll get used to it!  :D

Is this another something that the caching community didn't ask for :(

I've got four found logs to write, Sedgeberrow caches, so will let you know :)

I read somewhere recently that there were some spam bots posting logs on caches with links in that, if followed, took you to sites with malware/viruses in. This may be part of the reason for the change.

A good chunk of my logs are affected as my sig in c:geo posts links to the CC forum in BB code, plus I have posted links to here when appropriate, and links to other relevant places. From what I have just seen, my logs look a mess. If they had put just an ounce of thought into it they would of written a bit of code to convert the BB code lines to whatever they are using now. But no, this is Groundspeak we are talking about. They can keep my mess of logs, I don't have time to go through them.

Notice my FTF logs are now messed up  >:(

Now completed my four logs from Monday.

All rather bland and a bit micky mouse. The smiley's are now hidden in the 'How to Format' bit, if you can't remember what characters make the smiley you want.

You can still add web links e.g. [CacheWalker](http://cachewalker.createaforum.com/index.php?)

From the GS forums:

On the advice of Groundspeak's own stats website "MyGeocachingProfile" and the major stats site "Project-GC" I chose to mark my first-to-find caches with **FTF**, which now is showing as 'bolded' FTF (i.e. FTF).

I will be furious if these two stats sites are no longer able to pick-up my FTFs - I have around 2730 FTFs and FTF hunting forms one of my main pleasures when caching.

So, although **FTF** is still showing when you edit logs, it is displayed on geocaching.com cache pages as FTF - is this another case of HQ implementing major changes without seeing through all the consequences for the paying membership!!!

I am not amused!!!!

It's a real mess. I've had links in my logs for the past few years, to my blog and to this site, and they look awful now. A lot of people used to have parts of their logs in colour and that looks bad too now with the tags, as you say walktall! And thanks for sharing that B&R!

I don't see why they couldn't have implemented Markdown as a new system and locked our old logs to not edit, saved as pictures or whatever! I have no idea what Markdown is so don't really know if there would have been a way around it.

How does it affect "fewer than 3.5% of logs"?  :D

Because 96.5% of cachers only log with a "TFTC" or a "."?  ;)
