General Caching / Memory Lane & Wonders of the World
« on: June 01, 2020, 05:18:16 pm »
New souvenir campaign!

"From June 1 through January 3, earn up to five souvenirs by logging geocaches to move forward on the game board. Log your finds by January 6, 2021 to earn souvenirs."

More info here.

Seems fairly straightforward, and not much of a challenge... but maybe that's not a bad thing, considering the circumstances.

General Caching / Geocaching stories
« on: April 03, 2020, 01:42:56 pm »
If you've got a great geocaching story to tell, or just a memorable experience/day out, why not use up a few hours of your time at home to write it up?

If you do, you can enter it into the GAGB's story competition :)

Email your story as an attachment to stories@gagb.org.uk by July 31st to be in with a chance of winning!  :)

More info: https://www.gagb.org.uk/story-competition.php

Caching Events / Possible event
« on: February 09, 2020, 01:02:28 pm »
I might organise an event for my geocaching 10th anniversary.

Would people be able to attend something on the evening of Friday March 27th?

Like I said, I still haven't decided, so it may not happen, but I thought I'd check to see whether people are free to see if it's worth bothering.  :)

Is anyone planning to attend? It's quite a popular event, and I've heard good things about it:

GC8CVNR, this Saturday (Nov 30th), from 11am.

General Caching / What does this mean? (EarthCaches)
« on: September 28, 2019, 10:56:35 am »
Geocaching HQ posted this on social media: “We’re happy to announce that EarthCaches are available to all geocachers in honor of International EarthCache Day on October 12th and 13th.”

What does this mean? Aren’t EarthCaches always available? Or does it mean premium ones will be available to basic members? Or were they meant to say a souvenir is available to all geocachers?

 ??? ??? ???

Thought I'd start a thread to get the ball rolling.

Any ideas?

Caching Events / Monthly events?
« on: May 31, 2019, 09:27:30 am »
I was just wondering whether there’d be any interest in holding monthly (evening) events?

Nothing complicated, I was thinking it could be as simple as booking a table in a pub each month (maybe the same pub each time). I’ve attended a few of the ones in Cambridge and they’re nice events. I know there are some around, like Cheltenham, but that’s quite a long way for some of us for an evening event.

General Caching / Cache Carnival
« on: March 25, 2019, 01:58:26 pm »
Six souvenirs are up for grabs from today until April 14th.

To earn the first five, you’ve got to accumulate points on your leaderboard (previously Friend League). You get more points for finding caches with a high number of favourite points.

There are also 25 points up for grabs if you receive a favourite point on one of your own caches.

The sixth souvenir can be earnt by attending an official Creation Celebrations event.

More info and FAQs here

What do you think about this souvenir challenge? I think it’s a good idea as it promotes quality and creative caches above standard film pots and bisons.

Feel free to share your progress here as the Carnival progresses.

General Caching / Geocaching Log Ratings
« on: January 10, 2019, 09:54:16 am »
You can now rate geocache logs based on their story and usefulness.

What do you think? Hopefully it will encourage better quality logs.

Edit to add: odd, they only appear on some cache listings, and not on others.

Another edit: seems to be limited to certain countries, all caches in Norway seem to show it.

CacheWalker TB races / Alternative TB race - ‘Racing Hounds’
« on: January 07, 2019, 11:37:14 pm »
I thought I’d post this here given that we aren’t running a TB race this year  :(

The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) are running a trackable race throughout 2019.

The theme is ‘Racing Hounds’, and there are four breeds to choose from. All tags are entered into the main race, in which the tag that travels the furthest wins (much like our CW races).

However, each breed has its own goal. So your breed is also competing with others of its breed to be crowned ‘Best of Breed’:

  • Retriever: the prize for the dog tag that is picked up the most times.
  • Pointer: the dog tag that has the most ‘discover’ logs.
  • Setter: the dog tag that clocks up the most mileage without leaving the British Isles.
  • Boxer: The TB that is dropped off or visits the most caches that are ‘small', 'regular' or 'large'.

Tags cost £5.50 each and part of the profit will be donated to upcoming UK Mega events!

The race begins on January 12th, and will launch at GAGB’s ‘Start the Year’ event in Keyworth (GC7X2V9), where the tags will also be on sale. They’re also available to order online now! You can join at any time  - doesn’t have to be this weekend.

It should be a lot of fun and a good substitute for our CW race until it hopefully returns next year - and the money goes towards a good cause, supporting the UK Mega’s!

CacheWalker TB races / CW TB Race 2018 - name?
« on: December 31, 2017, 03:51:30 pm »
We were lucky to have two reviewers handing out trackable tags, meaning we can now hold our TB race  :)

Does anyone have an idea for a name?

Previous ones have been:

  • CacheWalker SuperBike Challenge (CWSBC)
  • CacheWalker Footballers Challenge (CWFC)
  • CacheWalker Race to Rio (CWR2R)

How about simply: CacheWalker Travel Bug Race 2018 (CWTBR)

Or, as Signal the Frog is on the tags: CacheWalker: Signal on Tour (or similar)

Any other suggestions?

I think we should set the start date as Jan 8 (gives attendees around a week to activate their trackables) - or do you think that's too late?

For now, I'll call it CacheWalker Travel Bug Race 2018, and we can change that later if we decide to.

Congratulations / Happy 10th Birthday CacheWalker
« on: September 30, 2017, 10:37:27 am »
CacheWalker is officially 10 today!  ;D

Thanks to the founder members: Bikermel76, Schnarff, Wrighty, Mrs Wrighty and JimJinks.

Additional thanks to Wrighty for placing so many caches over the years on fantastic walks for CacheWalker events.

Thanks to walk tall and tarmacjohn for supporting and contributing so much to CacheWalker as well.

Thanks to Gackt and Willow Wisps for also organising CacheWalker events in the past.

Lastly, thanks to who've attended our events and posted on our forum over the years. We've had over 600 'Attended' logs on our events; the headcount is probably over 1000 (as there are often several people per caching account). So CacheWalker's essentially gone Mega - twice  ;D

Here's to the next 10 years!  ;D

Post your birthday wishes here...

Not something I think should be done!

Some interesting changes/additions here.
