Caching Gear/ Tech Talk / Re: New gps for xmas
« on: November 21, 2014, 10:33:22 pm »
Well Mrs S-o=A bought me my first little e-trex and then my present Garmin Hcx which has been just great but is now getting a little weird at times so she offered to buy the 650.
I really am facing a learning curve cus whatever they say the Hcx does not do downloads from the website and boy have I tried. If I have trouble with the 650 I will post as matters progress.
If anyone has words of one syllable to instruct on downloads to an Hcx I would be pleased to hear but please no convoluted Garmin speak with multiple updates which do not work.Sorry but been there.
Do not have any words re the alternatives mentioned but no one I have met out there has ever been using anything other than Garmins or smart phones, iphone and androids.I have the latter and though it's okish it is just not reliable enough to be of much use unlees cnnected to the net which don't really work out there.

Maybe Dragons Den sometime, but not many clever electronics people (Cambridge?) realise the potential .
Maybe one or two are reading this.
Hint:- needs the gps and waterproof and tough screen which also encloses 3g or 4g phone access as internet not reliable out there, and about the size of a small Garmin.
Dream on.!

Forgot to say I received my  New Garmin 650 yesterday from Handtec via Amazon within 24 hours of ordering it for £282.90 plus £5.95 post and package.
As this is my Christmas present from Mrs S-of-A, I cannot use it until the day but I have negotiated release of the quick start manual (first year level) but online info.much more helpful, but not from Garmin where the "proper" manual is currently unavailable.Don't you just love em?!!

i have done a lot of research on options including testing this forum but have not found any phone/gps hybrids  other than of course the ubiquitous ipads,Androids and mobile apps. which are not a patch on dedicated gps for serious caching.
Maybe,one day? Probably!
