Title: CacheWalker TB Race 2018
Post by: Site Admin on January 02, 2018, 12:00:49 pm
This is the place for all discussion (unless you think your point deserves its own topic) for the
CacheWalker TB Race: Signal on Tour (name TBC)

The TB race will begin at 0:00 January 8th, and will end on 0:00 December 25th.
Participants received a special trackable tag from volunteer reviewers at the 2017 CacheWalker Twixmas Bash. These tags will be placed in caches and the TB which travels the furthest will win!
If you want, you can attach a Signal/frog related item to your TB tag, but there is no requirement to do so.

The Rules:

The official TB-run page for the race is now up and running here - CWTBR 2018 (http://www.tb-run.com/show-race.php?run=CWTB18)

How to join the race:
Please email griffgrof@cachewalker.co.uk or Griff Grof via his profile with the public Trackable ID (TBxxxx), that you find on the 'Details' page of your TB on Geocaching.com.
There no limit for the number of participants.
You can still request to take part after the start date, but the sooner the better/further!

Please name your TB in this format: CW: Signal on Tour (your caching name)

Let the race (and discussion) begin - 3,2,1... GO!

Do we have to attach a superbike to our TB or could it be something more appropriate ie a frog?

Do we have to attach a superbike to our TB or could it be something more appropriate ie a frog?

I was thinking we could make it optional, the common thing (in the past SuperBikes) is the tag. So, either something appropriate, something else or even nothing.

Unless people think otherwise?  ???

I would make it optional (two of mine lost their bikes!) but a frog would be good :)

I see you have gone with the 8th as a start date  8)

Sorry I couldn't make the event, I have been rather pre occupied recently. Have you any objection to me entering a TB into the race, I have a spare one hanging around. No problem if you just want the TB's handed out at the event, I can keep it until next year.

I think that’s fine, plus you could always attach a Signal/frog related item to it anyway (if you want to)  :)

The race has officially started and currently has 5 participants: myself, gaz_zippy, walk tall, the sundowner and Avanclan.

I really should drop my tb off in a cache to commence the race 😀

Mine's been ready since the 7th but with not much caching and the caches I have found being too small (35mm was the biggest :o ), I've not yet started :(

Unfortunately howling gales and rain stopped us from setting our TB of - hopefully once the weather decides to behave itself we will get out walking and caching!

I still haven't set mine off, and I left it at home so looks like it won't be in a cache until March  :D :(

Dropped my TB off in Tintagel, it's been picked up already but not logged as retrieved, I wonder if it's going to go missing before recording any mileage at all?

Things are very slow with the TB's ATM - only Sundowners seems to be moving.
We saw some cachers at the cache where our TB is/was on Sunday [ we were doing some maintenance to our series] and we thought they were going to pick it up - but so far nothing has been logged!
Fingers crossed that things will get moving when the weather improves - perhaps Griff Groff has the right idea - leave placing it till Easter!

The cache I put mine in has gone quiet :(   - Whoo's been there? (https://coord.info/GC560NX)

Thought there would be some travelling cachers who might stop for this one as it's a large cache - roll on the better weather.

Poor you - all our snow has gone, roads clear [ someone important must live further along our road as it's always well gritted!], but we aren't going out caching yet - everywhere is very wet and muddy - remember the twixmas walk?

The cache I left my TB in has had one visit, 25th March, since I dropped mine off at the end of Jan and the cacher was a newbie. Lets hope the weather gets going and more cachers visit, as it's a long way to retrieve my TB :o

Perhaps I can go for the least travelled and still active TB non-race ;)

Well ours was picked up on in Feb and placed in a cache in March all of 26 miles away, but so far isn't showing on the race!!! So we might be competing with you WT for the least travelled TB!!!

is anyone checking their TB's in the run - looking at the table it doesn't look as though its been updated for some time - some are still on 0 miles, but have moved on - weird!

Well mine's on 0 as I still haven't placed it in a cache  ::) :o :o :o - don't underestimate it though, 6 months is still plenty of time for someone to take it across the world  :D

mines still on 0 - but it has gone to Japan!!!!! I don't think the cacher who moved it has done anything wrong, so not sure whats happening.............. :-\

If it’s an error with TB run then we can check and add the miles up manually in December, don’t worry  :)

Well it seems to be the place to go, as my TB has made it to The Osaka shrine called Ikukunitama-Jinju Shrine (https://coord.info/GC3WXAC) in Japan  ;D ;D ;D

The cacher did say they were having problems logging it into the cache, lets hope they resolve it :o

Update:
The cacher is a newbie from Brussels and my TB is their first, so have sent them an email of how to Drop a TB into a cache, fingers crossed ::)

Fingers crossed they manage to log it for you.

Is your table of the TB race being updated? So far it is only showing 0 miles for us and several others!

Admin - @Griff Grof may need to force a mileage update on the TB's, as mine shows zero but on it's home page over 4000

This error message doesn't look promising :(

Yes, it’ll be a case of adding up manually in December before the Twixmas event. But let’s hope Tb-run sort out the issue before then... I see it’s affecting all races  :-\
Title: Re: CacheWalker TB Race 2018

My TB has now been dropped in the Japan cache, so that's nearly 6300 miles to add to my mileage  8)

But, there's been so much dipping with my TB, it's not going to be fun trying to work it out :( I've now put an explanation what dipping is to try and stop it.
Title: Re: CacheWalker TB Race 2018
Post by: Hogshunters on August 20, 2018, 05:24:43 pm
We attach a note to the TB specifically asking them not to dip or visit caches - still doesn't seem to sink in! Just have to grin and bear it  ???

TB-run has been shut down permanently now. I've made a note of the TB numbers and will have to manually work it out in December  :D

That's a real shame its shut down :( From reading through posts, is it due to changes on GC.com on what mileage shows through ???

Tb-run still have a static list of all trackables in races. So we don't forget, these are the tags in our 2018 race:

TB88KQV (https://coord.info/TB88KQV) - hogshunters
TB88KR4 (https://coord.info/TB88KR4) - Avanclan
TB83DMN (https://coord.info/TB83DMN) - gaz_zippy
TB8G9KT (https://coord.info/TB8G9KT) - Griff Grof
TB8G9MY (https://coord.info/TB8G9MY) - walk tall

Just been through the logs on my TB.

Some thing odd was going on between cachers 'Les Pandas' and 'CRISFIL17', like on the 15th Jun, my TB visited a UK and a French cache, not impossible but no log of it changing hands and this happened more than once  ???

09/May/2018    25.73miles    Charlie_Towlson took it to
15/May/2018    36.5miles       Les Pandas grabbed it & took it to
13/Jun/2018    535.66miles?   CRISFIL17 took it to - no record of it changing hands!?
15/Jun/2018    529.87miles?   Les Pandas took it to  - no record of it changing hands!?
15/Jun/2018    532.67miles?   CRISFIL17 took it to  - no record of it changing hands!?
23/Jun/2018    146.37miles?   Les Pandas took it to  - no record of it changing hands!?
24/Jun/2018    12.93miles?   CRISFIL17 grabbed it & took it to
19/Aug/2018    6,272.32miles   Reemus5 placed it
14/Nov/2018    5,546.13miles   SLOlocals placed it

Lots and lots and lots of "took it to" dipping logs. So, up to admin what miles count?

Title: Re: CacheWalker TB Race 2018
Post by: Griff Grof on November 20, 2018, 01:07:46 pm
Ideally we shouldn’t count dipping, but I’m leaning towards including it this year as it makes it quicker/easier to work out.

But if we follow our published rules, we should only count the first log of each cacher (i.e. the first drop).

What do you think?
Title: Re: CacheWalker TB Race 2018
Post by: walktall on November 20, 2018, 08:15:59 pm
As it was in rules about dipping, that's how I came up with the log extracts from my TB, only the first dip, all the rest (in my case 336 records!!!!!) ignored.

For my TB, on the page it shows a mileage of: 16,073miles
But my list ignoring dipping, that drops to: 13,638miles

I'll recheck when we are close to the finish 'line' :)

The 'CacheWalker TB Race 2018: Signal on Tour' winners:

First place: walk tall (13,702 miles)

Second place: Hogshunters (6,026.3 miles)

Third place: Avanclan (983.51 miles)

Unfortunately, we're not running a TB race this year. This is partly due to the closure of the tb-run website. Hopefully there'll be another CacheWalker race in the future - perhaps next year?  :)
