Title: Geocaching Message Centre

What do you think  ??? Seems like a good idea particularly having read the FAQ (blog link) - glad we still receive the messages by email as well AND the old feature will remain for those who don't like it  :) (or for those who find bugs)

.... And it's not working for me  ::)

I think it says the old system will be staying and you can turn on email notifications for the messages  :)

I'm just wondering, knowing GS, if at a later date they will shut off messaging emails (with the full message in it), keeping it all 'in house' under their control and this new messaging is the start of this process and all you'll get is an email saying you've got a message but no content, forcing you to login :(

as I said:
or am I just being cynical ::) :o

PS: They stopped sending the My_Caches gpx update via email and you now have to login to get it - a right pain :(

They probably will remove the old function eventually, since I can see the new one developing more e.g read recipients (showing when your message has been read), group chats, maybe even groups like Facebook groups?

I just don't see why they can't put what's on the top dark green bar on the far right of the white bar? It would save so much space and it would look more streamlined, and so better  :D

@walktall, what's the My_Caches GPX update? The file for GSAK?

What do others think of the new function?

On the face of it seems like they have done exactly the opposite to what is being proposed here:  http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=330993&st=0&gopid=5490989&#entry5490989 (http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=330993&st=0&gopid=5490989&#entry5490989)

I have been out of the loop a bit this past week so wasn't aware of this thread, thank you for pointing out. I haven't even thought of ever needing any of those features before. At the moment I don't itching to use any of them if they do integrate into this new friend chat thingy, but maybe will change my mind once I start to use.

On the chat as it stands at the moment, I have just had a quick play. Someone else touched on this in the groundspeak forum, but I find it a bit alarming too that anyone can a message to anyone, and include a photo along with the message, that is open to possible abuse.

@walktall I think you are right about keeping it all in house eventually. With this new chat thingy I got an email from someone who sent me a message, but it told me to log in to the site to see the message. I have no ads on the chat page at the moment, but if everyone has to log in to that to see their messages then it could be a big money spinner for GS if they did place ads on that page.

Well, it's now out of beta.

Is it me, or not much has changed since it went into beta?  :D

Odd how you can message through the Intro app but not the full app?!  :o ::)
