Title: What is the strangest thing you have found whilst out Geocaching?
Post by: Gackt on March 25, 2014, 07:38:44 am
A conversation I was just having off of the boards made me think I would ask here also. I have found a number of odd things I would not expect to find in the places that I found them, including underwear hung in trees! What is the strangest thing you have found whilst out Geocaching?

A wallet - not very strange but it had two driving licences in it belong to two different people :o

Off the top of my head, not a whole load, but one that springs to mind was a bright coloured plastic child's tricycle wedged halfway up a tree.

I found this:

next to this:

I have also found a £5 note under a cattle water trough along with an 'interesting' magazine. Well Roxy sniffed it out actually. I did take a photo, but not suitable for here. The things that go on during the night in the woods  :D

What an exciting life you lot seem to have, the most interesting thing I have found is a sheep with its head stuck in a fence. And it had the good grace to kick me in the shin when I rescued it.

How kind of the sheep! Hope it didn't hurt you too much.

That does remind me of one find I had around the lake near that pub event I did last year that you came to after you completed the GCW series. It was some months before that, but we found a duck that had got caught up in a fishing line and was in quite a lot of distress. I didn't attempt to untangle myself, but did find a nearby fisherman that managed to cut it loose without too much harm to it.

Brilliant thread!
Not quite us, but when we were on Harris and Lewis for one of Simply Paul's do's a couple of the other cachers attending found an unexploded bomb and had the Bomb Disposal crew out to "remove" it!  They really enjoyed that.
On the same trip we were driving down through Lewis when we were flagged down by a woman who's house had smoke just starting to come out of the roof, the roof space was on fire, that had been converted into a living area and her Sister was till up there.  While L rang 999 from her mobile, there was no house phone, I tried to get the sister out but, sadly, failed.  Had lots of forms to fill in at the Police Station afterwards - an experience we don't wish to have again.
On a lighter side, there's a bit of an old toilet cistern near LQ:Worcestershire, somebody found that and reported the cache as trashed!
We've found some monster slugs (and inadvertently picked a few up - ugg!) with caches that have been in holes and in trees.
Looking forward to hearing more stories....

Think i have seen the same items in the above photos, were they on the way to the Rendcomb Rat Run cache?.

Found some old safes recently on a series at Church Lench after reading a previous log.

That just reminded me, I found a set of cutlery in the hedge line finding a cache, trying to remember which cache it was. Brought some of it home as I thought they would be handy for diy/dog knifes/etc :)

While hunting for a cache in a hedge in Yorkshire we cam across a box which we at first assumed to be the cache, but it only contained a key.
The real cache was a few feet away.

When Mrs Grizzly was out caching with a friend in an urban area near Long Eaton she spotted a small fire start in the front garden of a terrace house.  Both her and a friend ran quickly to a nearby small repairs garage to ask them to ring the fire brigade, they did better than that and three burly men all came running with very large fire extinguishers and soon had the fire out.  By this time the residents realised what had happened and were very thankful to 2 passing geocachers who saved their garden and maybe even their house.

L8HNB, I have never seen a real UXB whilst caching, or any other time for that matter. But I, and a few others here, know of a cache where you have to find and defuse a WWII bomb (not real). There's not many places you would get away with placing a container like that :o I could never wish the fire experience you had on anyone, what a horrible experience for you.

Wrighty, yes, saw whilst going to that cache. You must of taken a similar route to I did the first time. I have recently helped that one back to life, it got washed away sometime ago. I take a much flatter route along the river to that area mostly, though I could do with doing a bit of hill walking practice otherwise I will struggle at the coming CacheWalker event walk.

Off the top of my head (I probably have found stranger things)... the wellington boot just below Fish Hill, Broadway! *goes to find photo walktall uploaded of it*

The strange thing about it is the fact that it has been there unmoved for years - well, at least it was there last time I walked past  :D

Think I'll post more in this thread as I remember more strange things I've found/as I find strange things whilst caching in the future  :)

While walking on Worms Head, something I've wanted to do for sometime and now there is an Earth cache (http://coord.info/GC5AP82) there as well ;D

part way along Worms Head

I could see something out to sea. Was it a large bit of wood, a boat or what ??? Used the camera on full zoom to take a picture, so I could look at it later. Was a bit surprised to see what it was when I looked a day later :o :o :o

 :o

I await the posting of your next photos which show it finishing doing its backstroke, getting out and drying itself with a towel, then sitting with its family in deckchairs on the see front.

I've found two magazine stashes (the sort that are inappropriate for children to find), some discarded empty handbags (I suspect stolen property, but the Police didn't seem very interested), several cars with steamed up windows, and a couple who were inflagrante al fresco (I had to make a large detour round them to reach the cache).

However the most unusual thing that I found was near a cache in Florida.  I was returning to the car on a boardwalk over some small lakes when I found a sign saying "Beware of Alligators".  Just a few minutes before I had been searching the bushes next to the water! Fortunately I did find the cache  :)
