Title: Long shot
Post by: tarmacjohn on April 29, 2013, 10:10:35 pm
Right, this is a long shot. But if you don't ask you don't get.

Our Scout troop has 4 sites that we use on a rota for our week long Summer Camp(Swanage, Cheddar, Woolacombe & Portsmouth); that way a Scout will never go to the same site twice. Unfortunately our Woolacombe camp site is unavailable this year due to bridge repairs, we are therefore looking for ideas of where to go.

We have simple needs, we are trained up to Greenfield standard so all we actually need is a field, drinking water would be a bonus but not essential.

So if anyone knows of someone who has a suitable site that we can go in the southern half of the country (the cheaper the better) or if you have been to a site that has an event field that can accommodate 20ish tents then let me know.

Thanks for looking

From the top of my head I am not coming up with anything. But a work colleague runs similar activities with the Air Cadets, so I have written on my hand to ask him when he gets into work later on if he's got any good ideas.

I'm not sure how much it costs but Kidderminster has a fairly good campsite/lodge. There is a lot of activities e.g archery, climbing wall, zip wire, there's also lots of room to go orienteering and you could visit the Sandstone Houses

The Kidderminster one, is Kinver... good site , but is not really in southern England. Will check with explorer's leader to see if she has ideas.

Ahh didn't see the southern part of the country bit. And thankyou, I had forgotten the name, haven't been there in over 4 years!

Don't really want a Scout campsite, but won't dismiss it completely at the moment.

Sorry, but my colleague was not that helpful. They have been to the same places by what he said, Woolacombe being the first one he suggested, so I have tried to have think myself. Do you try and stay in a place with lots of things to do, like on the coast, or is it just to spend time out in the open air?

I have done very little en mass camping. Inland, I have took part in a long charity walk along the ridgeway, where there were three base camps. The first one was at a farm in Watlington, Oxfordshire that would have enough room for you plus had water and toilet facilities. The final camp was at a farm near Barbury Castle, and there was a halfway one between the two, would need to look the name up of that one. All three places do not have a lot 'to do' around though, except for walks, views etc.
