Title: Uh oh... Premium member only caches now useless?
Post by: Griff Grof on January 11, 2013, 07:15:58 pm
Oh dear  :o

Premium member only caches are now visible to THE WORLD on the GEOCACHING MAP - I was scanning the map without logging in, and spotted every premium cache was shown. You could zoom right down into each, pin-pointing their location. When you click on them, however, Groundspeak ask you to become a PM member... They only keep the cache pages secret then..

WHAT  :o The only reason I made any of my caches PM only were so that muggles and land owners couldn't see where they were located - I think serval of us have done the same, after a certain night cache incident in the area  :D

I think premium member only caches are now useless - people can find them without a hint! Landowners can get their locations to contact Groundspeak (or worse)...What is this all about! They're technically no longer exclusive to us premium members, either. One of the reasons I pay for a premium membership is to access the huge amounts of PM caches - now I may as well not bother being a PM, as I rarely use the other PM features  :-\

What do you think about this!  ???

Must have been a glitch.
I've just looked. Whilst you can see the PMO caches when zoomed out (you always could) as you zoom in they disappear.

Do you use PQ's ???

Don't know how to   :o I've used it ONCE to find a "Large" cache nearby.

If groundspeak should be updating anything, it should be PQ to make it more clear and user friendly - what's all that 500 cache thing and expirations  ??? - and I'm meant to be good with computers!  :D

Err, do you not download loads of caches round a centre point in one GPX download ???

I use them constantly but then again, I don't have a smart phone with constant Internet access on it :(

I manually "add to GPS" for each cache be it 1 or 100  :)

O my god Griff, I remember those days years ago, a right pain and there wasn't even the programs like GSAK around to help :o :o :o

ASAP :D

There is a video on geocaching How to Create a PQ (http://www.youtube.com/v/JdUToGF1Kkc?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0)

Perhaps Griff you should watch this, it is only 8:26 long.

GSAK
http://gsak.net/
What can't it do?
Not a lot really. Worth reading the forums.
Ever want to find out some caching fact from the caches you've found? Bet there's either a macro already there, or someone on the forum will knock one up for you!

This video doesn't appear to show that you can do a PQ of the caches you can see on the map, I consider this to be GC.com most useful feature.

Go to YouTube and search for 'pocket query'.

Should be the 1st result.

Ok, new guy here, but I thought I'd share something.

I use C:Geo on my smartphone to do caching, and not brilliant for GPS, but I cope with it. I'm still very new to it, and I've not yet worked out half the things people have mentioned 'PQ' ? 'GPX' ? I might be young but I prefer sitting down and learning things from others.

Going on the topic, C:Geo does actually tell me where PMO caches are, right down to centermetres on my phone, but as a basic member, I won't pay for a hobby I want as cheap as possible, but getting the most out of it. I haven't claimed a single PMO, because of own morals, I leave those for people who have paid for it.

I've heard that C:geo and some other third party software gives access to some things they should maybe not, but haven't looked into it myself.

As for logging premium caches you have found if you are not a premium member.. this shouldn't be a problem, mostly. Many people do this via known backdoor method. Sometimes families who have more than one caching account in the same household, but do not all have premium membership.

If it was me personally, and if I had a basic membership, I would log them if I have found them, but I would contact the cache owner first to check that they are ok with me doing so. Most will be I am sure.

There is a known 'Back door' for logging Premium Member Only caches. (There's a couple of ways!)
Groundspeaks view is - If you Found the cache and signed the log, you can log online.
If the cache owner deletes the log you can appeal to Groundspeak. (You need proof you signed the log. Photo of the log book/sheet with you name and previous finders shown would be enough.)

The Back door was closed a few years ago after an update to the site.
Jeremy (GS owner) got it added back in and said it would stay in.

It is there mainly for families to log, but if you can work out where the cache is, or stumble on it, why shouldn't you log it?
