How time passes! A whole week has been and gone, and North/South Wales came out as the winning option on "Which is the best walking country?" - Oh dear, only 3 votes! Previously we had 5, and we were meant to beat it this week. I think part of the problem is most of you don't know that the widget on the homepage doesn't work right now, and you need to vote directly on this thread at the moment. I'm sure many more of you voted on the homepage and thought the vote was registered, but sadly that is not the case until the problem is resolved.

Poll #29 is now up  ;D

Get voting on Which cache would you prefer to find? - get those votes coming in, this week we will beat 5!

Get voting, and as always, another poll coming next Thursday, as the start of the Week of the Weekly Poll is marked...

Introducing the first ever Week of the Weekly Poll

What is it?
A site event which runs every six months (aka every 30 polls)

What will happen?
It's a surprise for now! Next Thursday a new poll will come up as normal, and there may also be a few other mini polls running across the site plus the surprise in store...

What's the point in doing this? What is it for?
To celebrate the fact that we've kept a new poll coming every week for six months! To also celebrate the site has been going for that long. The Weekly Poll has been going since the moment the site launched, so it is the bare bones of the site, and maybe this event will also encourage more people to join in every week.

How can I help?
Yes please! PM me ideas for all sorts of polls - about Geocaching, CacheWalker or anything else!

_______________________________

So, get voting this week, and this time next week the Week of the Weekly Poll will kick off - it won't all be about polls, also to celebrate 6 months of the forum in general and CacheWalker turning 5 over all.

Depends on your/ the quiz's definition of GPS.

I do a lot of my caching with a phone... Strictly speaking, it's not a GPS.  ;)

I wanted to do a webcam and a cito this year, I have only managed to do the webcam. I also planned at completing my terrain / difficulty grid, and I only managed about half of it. I pretty much sucked at my geocaching goals this year :P

Post by: tarmacjohn on December 27, 2012, 09:17:39 pm
I wanted to do sooooooo many things.

Highlights included 11 icons in a day, setting my own event (I actually did 3) and climbing Snowdon.

Low lights included not completing my D/T grid, not doing any real extreme caches, no night caches and no 100+ cache day.

I voted no. I do quite like difficult puzzles and hard terrain, but I do not chose to do because of. Time, and money for fuel overrides decisions I may possibly make under different circumstances. If I had plenty of spare time and my wallet was flush, I may of voted differently.

None of the options really fit, it would be irresponsible of me to drive anywhere in these conditions and there are no caches within easy reach. So, yes I would go out if possible.

Looks like its just going to be local walks with the dog.

Might be time to go and find some more  Fungimanforager (http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=1e32c7c7-59a9-46fa-b64a-9a8a54b03458) caches

Out of the 8 5/5's I have done I don't think any on there own are 5/5, although fun and yes an element of difficulty, perhaps a combination of the puzzle on WEREWOLF (http://coord.info/GC1NH60) and the climb on ARBOREAL ADVENTURE 9 (http://coord.info/GC2NFMH) would maybe get you closer to a 5/5.

For me this one still has to be the most difficult cache find to date (a 4/5), not only getting to gz, but then finding that pesky film pot once there: The Cave Troll's Lair (http://coord.info/GCTDF6)
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Griff Grof on January 26, 2013, 07:31:48 pm
I agree that many 5/5 caches aren't worthy of their title, by reading logs on them etc.

Yes. A real challenge that one. In my defense, I was new and thought a snail would be the hardest cache EVER so a 5 in Difficulty, and I thought the steep hill and thorns at GZ worked out as a Terrain 5...  :o  :D

How I explain Geocaching depends on how playful I feel at the time of questioning. Sometimes I do a Dr Solly and claim to be hunting for slugs, sometimes I am taking radiation levels, sometimes I am surveying the new nuclear waste site and sometimes I am actually Geocaching and tell people all about it. Usually explaining the virtues of the countryside and exercise along with the excitement of finding a magnetic micro in some litter round the back of a gate post.

Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Gackt on March 16, 2013, 01:45:07 pm
There often is not anything I want to trade with in caches, if there is anything in them at all. There seems to me to have been a steady decline in the amount of swag I see in caches since I started playing a few years ago. I more often find myself putting something into a cache, but not taking anything in return.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: gaz_zippy on March 16, 2013, 08:03:39 pm
Never trade, but when hiding I do put a few swaps in my caches, usually novelty erasers or other pound shop tat, sorry goods  ;D I also usually add a carabiner pen and a never get lost pen, sadly when I revisit the caches to check on them the swaps have usually been swapped for fresh air  >:(

How time passes! A whole week has been and gone, and the results are in...

"Which do you think is the best nation wide series?"
Sidetracked -  3 votes, 33.3%
They're all good in their own way - 3 votes, 33.3%

Church Micro - 2 votes, 22.2%
I don't like any of them - 1 vote, 11.2%
Motorway Mayhem - 0 votes, 0%
A road Anarchy - 0 votes, 0%

Therefore, They're all good in their own way and Sidetracked (The official winner) came out as the winning options on  "Which do you think is the best nation wide series?" - 9 votes, WOW  :), thanks to all for voting, beating our record of 8, and let's finally get to 10 this week, just one more user will need to vote!

Depends on what type of caching I'm doing, as sometimes in a group, I find the group seems to be in a hurry to move on - or am I just getting slower :o ;) But other times it's great that there is a group of us  :D
Title: Re: Weekly poll

Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Gackt on April 28, 2013, 08:44:24 am
And so I took that easy option, thank you for adding :) I did think about it a bit more though, and although the main part of my earlier caching was done just by myself, my caching over the past couple of years has been done more in groups varying from 1 to 8 people at a time with me.

I think I enjoy it a little more nowadays doing with other people, as long it is with other cachers, and not non-cachers who moan about my caching ;D
Title: Re: Weekly poll

Had to go with 'It Depends' as it is usually a 50/50 split between alone and with one other geocacher. Only really do group caching at events. Sometimes you just need to get out alone, other times it is nice to chat on the walk, which ever I choose it is a great way to unwind, Monday comes around far too quickly :-)

However partial I am to entering the darkside, that's a toughy to answer being that we live in such a beautiful area with some good caches above ground.

"more rewarding" - hmmmmmmm

I would say that they are different and more unusual but more rewarding, not sure about that. I did a most excellent cache (http://coord.info/GC462E) in the Lake District that was very rewarding due to the: scenery, effort required and I just love the mountains.

PS But really looking forward to the 5th Oct and some more BA caches :D

When a cache hosting site like geocaching.com becomes as large as it has, they need to cover their costs somehow, and so I have voted yes. There may be better ways they could go around it, maybe a blanket fee that everyone has to pay but being much lower than it is now? Ultimately that specific company (groundspeak) is just that, a company out to make money, not to just cover their costs though.

Obviously I would rather it was free, but most clubs/associations charge for membership. I am in Scouting which charges membership, I pay to play skittles each week. It is up to us to decide whether we want to be in the club and pay for it's particular benefits.

There's the added complication, that there is an Event (http://coord.info/GC4PXTD) happening at Imber on the 29th December and for those who don't know, Imber is on Salisbury Plain in the MOD firing Range, so is only open on a few dates in the year.

Yes. Another reason not to do the 29th, it may as well not be on the poll (so many people will choose Imber over it, I can't make it due to sister's bday so there wouldn't be need in me organizing, TJ probably can't make it due to daughters birthday) I just didn't want to upset Wrighy by not including as that was the date he wanted  :-\

PLEASE if anyone wants to suggest other dates do, (also for this poll you can change your vote, so if a better date pops up you can change it to that!)

If it falls on the 29th, I 100% can't make it - but, as I said elsewhere, neither do I want to be an obstacle for the event, but now there are even more reasons for not being on that date...  :-\ :D

A Twixmas event loses it's appeal when we start pushing for dates either side of it.This is only my opinion, but I think the 29th is spot on despite it clashing with an event which isn't really that close to us at Imber.

For what it's worth, I have changed my vote to the 30th.

I think we are going to find it impossible to please everyone so at the end of the day the people setting the caches and the event will have to agree on a date and the rest of us will have to like it or lump it.

Perhaps a meeting for all those involved or interested may be beneficial as we can have a calendar in front of us and talk it through rather than everyone just chucking in the odd date on these forums.

BUT I expect we will also struggle to decide on a date for the meeting as well.  ;D :-\

I used to be indecisive but I'm not so sure now

Title: Re: Weekly poll

It might be that we are asking the questions in the wrong order :o

Perhaps it should be:

1) Who wants to organise the event?
2) Who wants to organise new caches?

Assuming that no-one wants to do the whole thing.

Then, what dates are the organisers available, perhaps they do this 'off-line'.

Then, they post various dates that they both can make and we vote  :D

Yes!

I think we've said Wrighty is placing the caches. I'd like to help with organising again... BUT I can't make the 29th 100% :D

Perhaps I should make a new area to the forum and just let the respective people who want to be involved access it  ???

Griff this was my point that we are doing things the wrong way round. What would happen if a date is chosen that the Event organiser and/or Cache placer can't make, where is the incentive for them to do these? The great thing about the Twixmas Event is the social side of it, especially for a Cache placer, as you don't get many opportunities to watch cachers scrabble after your caches :)
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Griff Grof on October 23, 2013, 06:12:12 pm
I think it's getting too complicated, perhaps we shouldn't have an event at all  :(

We are doing the things the wrong way round now, but on the Twixmas thread we have been having discussion with regards to who wants to organize and who will place the caches.

Wrighty said he would consider placing caches in the Aldestrop and wouldn't be able to help with the event-side of things due to this responsibility, then I said I would be willing to help with the event, and I think you [walktall] did too? :)

Then, we started to discuss dates: I suggested the 28th, confusing it for the 29th (thinking it was the Sunday) and I then made it clear I couldn't make the 29th, and so the event would be one helper down. Wrighty then said it would have to be the 29th, not the 28th.

Then, I suggested we make it pre or after Twixmas - at the end of the day it would still be an event, and that's what counts :D

I then thought the fairest way to decide would be to put a poll up, to prevent any squabbles and disagreements. I posted asking if it would be a good idea, and then another post later, in case anyone missed it, and there wasn't a reply for a couple of days, of which changed the topic back to the hall  :) Therefore, I thought no news is good news, and it put up the poll - I put the 29th on because I didn't want to upset Wrighty by not including his preferred date.  :)

So, we were doing things the right way round, but correctly so now we are not.

So, I think you [walktall] said you couldn't make the 29th and nor can I. If Wrighty can't do any other of the four dates above, then I think it's best we leave the event which would be a shame - unless someone else can organize it and volunteer to do so for the 29th.

If any other date is chosen etc then we wont be upset.

Yes, plus it wouldn't feel right without you both there!  ;D

Can you not do any other date (forget the ones in the poll  :D ) within a month either side of the 29th?  :) - it wouldn't be Twixmas, but it's still an event around the festive period, and it's the enjoyable day caching, socializing and eating (and drinking!) that counts  :D

WE NEED A MEETING

We are going to be here forever trying to randomly hit a date that suits all, if we sit down with a calendar in front of us we will all be able to see exactly where we are.

Come to think of it, we probably won't be able to agree on a date for the meeting either.  :-\

I have voted. At the same time I have haven't thought too deeply about the good and bad points, I don't have a lot of thinking time at the moment. It would be interesting to hear others views either way. Immediate points that come to mind are; for the number hunters the more people that learn about the activity then the more caches there will be out there to find, but on the flip side there's the possible quality degradation by caches being placed by newbs.

After my visit to London last week, I felt a bit more confident that police are much more aware of the activity, so that if I did happen to get stopped I shouldn't expect a long nervy interview about my activities. I didn't get stopped though :)

A bit more challenging if you live in Australia!

Would be nice if GS split it into England, Scotland, Wales.
Then there's Ireland. How would they split that?
All of Ireland, or Northern Ireland/Eire? Would Northern Ireland then be part of the UK?

Wonder if that's a 'future plan' for sub-section of countries?

I made a basic test Wherigo but want to build a proper one and get it published.

GS kept saying they were going to fix it and now Garmin with their new GPS units have dropped it, I think this is a real shame, as SangueG said, there is so much potential.

I've even played a Wherigo that had no cache at the end :o It was made to give tourists a locals tour of their city :)

Interesting reading on the whereIgo forums...

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=315085&pid=5310129&st=0&#entry5310129

Groundspeak are dragging their feet with WherIgo, but don't really want to release the reins for others to others to advance things.

Whilst Garmin no longer have the WherIgo on their new GPS's, there are apps on phones.
(But I'd rather use anything than my phone, especially if it's a long -time wise- WherIgo.)

Whereigo's...

I'd like to see them brought up to date and made more appealing to kids.  Why kids?  I think that Whereigos could be something that schools could use.  They could cover an entire range of subjects from ICT to Geography.  At the moment it seems a missed opportunity.

Archived caches, should further logs be allowed?

This poll has been sparked off by what happened on the 5* Severn Bore Event (http://coord.info/GC4VTVG) that was cancelled and archived. Some cachers still logged it. I've also seen this happen on other cache types, either very slow logging by a cacher or they have a new ID and are logging caches found when they may have been under a group/family ID.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: tarmacjohn on February 07, 2014, 10:16:33 pm
I have to put 'it depends on circumstances'.

I recently logged an archived web cam cache in London, I feel that despite it being archived I fulfilled the requirements of the cache. Whereas with the Bore event there was no event so how could anyone have attended.

As with most of these scenarios, it ultimately comes down to whatever you are happy claiming.

Ditto this response, in this instance the webcam cache was at some point live, same as a CO archiving a cache but leaving it in place, an event however that never took place, well how can you log that! That is like logging a cache that someone thought about placing, but never did.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Gackt on February 08, 2014, 10:20:22 am
I am split between 'No, the cache has been archived, end of' and 'It depends on the circumstance'.

Caches can be archived for a variety of reasons. Cache listings can also be locked down by reviewers so that no one can post a log. The fact that listings are not automatically locked when archived must mean that Groundspeak care not if you log them.

The Bore.. if my plans for that day had been different I would be very unimpressed at this moment. Had kids football plans for that day, and so did not go. If hadn't had those plans I would of been going. However, as it was archived for safety reasons, if I had planned to go I would have not gone, as there was not smiley/attended to get out of it (though not the whole reason to go there I know). But wait... it looks I could of got a smiley out of it! Groundspeak are daft.

Anyway, if I were that upset about it I could still log the event anyway and get my smiley because I don't need to sign a log book. Groundspeak are doubly daft.

Now it's my turn to say the triply daft thing. If I was really upset about it should I rally around enough people to log it so that it would turn Mega? What would happen then, as no one would of signed a log book? I can be just as daft as Groundspeak.

I started on the Somerset Well Rounded Cacher soon after it was set and still have a long way to go to complete it, I have pretty much forgotten about that one. I started some other similarly ambitious challenges, and they have gone the same way.

I have my eye on a few of the Lydford Locators challenge caches including the The Sociable Cacher, but apart from the CITO one I have long way to go yet.

I am gradually filling in my Day of the Year chart as a personal challenge for this year, but I feel spare time and money for fuel will put a halt to that before long. I filled in today though in the early hours of this morning :)

I have some 'personal challenges' that I'm looking to do, such as the 0-9 and A-Z 'cache placed by' and the same for 'cache name', as well as trying to do a few more puzzles, multis, and higher D and/or T rated caches.

If I see something which I qualify for, or can qualify for relatively easily, without going to too much trouble, then I'll probably go for it.  An example of this is http://coord.info/GC2JQNW (http://coord.info/GC2JQNW).

I'll probably end up doing a few more challenge caches when my find counts mounts up in the future.

I really enjoyed finding the lab cache that was set for me. It took me to a spot that I haven't stopped at before, and was very worthy of cache placement. I may well put a permanent one there myself at some point if someone else does not.

I really enjoyed setting one too. They do need more work, but as I understand them they were originally thought up to be temporary caches for large events, and for that purpose they work. Could do with having a bit of consistency with other cache types, i.e. be included in the stats, have a D/T rating, be able to post logs and attach photos, and have more than 1000 words. That last one hindered me with my original plan for a cache.

Notwithstanding that I really enjoyed finding the lab cache that was placed for me, as the concept went for lab caches this time around, I have to say that I just didn't get it - what it was done for and what it was trying to achieve - and of course there are the stats issues already pointed out by others.   So, for those cumulative reasons, I'm afraid I've had to opt for the “waste of time” option.   :(

I have voted for 'they need more work' - thus I think they are fine.

I thought lab caches are simply tests, from my understanding there is no set rule to what a lab cache can involve. They don't all require a find code do they? Perhaps the I Heart Geocaching project was using lab caches to test a new format for an upcoming permanent cache type?

Anyway, I think the concept we saw in Feb has potential, but it all seems like a bit of a waste of time with existing types such as Wherigo being neglected - why move on when there's stuff to fix?  :D

When you look back over the years at some of the gaffs that the frog and his froglets have made it does make one wonder how they have got to be the biggest site.  I nearly moved us to another site when the two uk reviewers (Eckington and Lactodorum) resigned but we were past the point of no return by then and knew lots of folks on geocaching.com.  Perhaps it just me being a grumpy old far7  :o

I am saying GSAK. I have done some interesting things with stats using it, and have seen other cacher's profile pages that they have created using it. However I am not using it at the moment as I have not paid for it and the nag screen is excessive. I can't afford to pay for it at the moment, but will do at some point.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: walktall on March 22, 2014, 10:44:31 am
I think GSAK is the best I've come across; it's not perfect but you can control what it reports on and what I find handy, control your finds, e.g. when a CO changes the D/T of a cache after you found it, perhaps because they have moved it.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Bear and Ragged on March 22, 2014, 10:45:26 am
GSAK!

Why?
I log YOSM. GSAK allows me to count each one where I found it, rather than all at where it is at the moment.
(And no XX finds, YY distinct finds)

I can get the location of Multi finals and Unknown caches, rather than the starting co-ordinates, as cache location.

Some cache hiders seem to have problems knowing where they are... Sometimes I'm surprised they manage to get the Country right!  :D
Title: Re: Weekly poll

Ditto B&R, as an avid fan of YOSM it is nice to have my 21 finds of that 'cache' recorded in the correct place, it means that when it moves to Scotland/Wales I don't end up with dodgy stats, also being a programmer by trade I am interested in how all these things work, this is the only stats package that allows me access to the source code that generated it :-)
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Yorkshire Yellow on March 25, 2014, 12:19:42 pm
I started off with MyGeocachingProfile.com, but got tired of having to manually update it, and how out of date it seemed during periods I when was quickly clocking up the finds but not having time to manually update it.

I then moved on to Project-GC, using the dynamic code, which produces automatically updated profile stats.  Except that now it seems to be a couple of days behind (for me at least).

Having bought GSAK a couple of months back, I'm now slowly getting to grips with some aspects of what it can do, and played with a profile stats macro for the first time at the weekend.  It may be that I start using that in future.

Clicked 'undecided'.

I am actually not undecided, but it was the best option for me to choose at this time. The geocaching.com site itself, as it stands, IMO is actually very good, it does what it is meant to pretty well for the most part. But, again IMO, with the vast amounts of money they must bring in through subscriptions, merchandise etc, it could be a lot better in some areas. Their half baked poorly implemented ideas are just one of my quibbles. I know I have plenty of half baked ideas myself, but the fact they they have financial backing and a team of paid employees should mean they get a bit more right than they have done recently.

I have not looked for a cache on geocaching.com for over 2 weeks. I have let my premium membership lapse, and am in no hurry to renew at present <- I guess this really shows what I feel of Groundspeak, and if they really listen to us Geocachers etc.

No routine checks of mine, except one which is on my regular short walk I do usually on a Friday lunch time from work which takes in one of my caches and one of Pir8s.

I normally completely maintain my two loops once a year.

If an issue is report, it normally takes me months - currently awaiting some nagging  :-\

I'm actually contemplating archiving all my caches, or offering them for adoption   :o

If I go close by any of my caches, I'll check them and glad I did on my Saintbridge (http://coord.info/GC15QY8) one the other day. No reported problems but I found it out in the open and looks like someone may have squashed it :o

Random maintenance checks usually, but I do check all logs and act accordingly as soon as I can, to the five caches we have locally.  The other one is a bit far away but fortunately it has never been a problem as it doesn't get a lot of visits and is a very tough screw top drinks container chosen especially for the role.

Went with option 4, most of my caches are puzzles, multi's and a single Wherigo, these don't get found too often so don't require much maintenance.

I would take Archie more often but he just doesn't do stiles and at 36kg, he's heavy to lift and with long legs that go stiff when I pick him up, so awkward as well.

Maggie the Collie usually goes with me. Kills 2 birds with one stone. Find some caches and walk the dog.

Stiles aren't a problem as she jumps quite well, goes nowhere near sheep as she is scared of them. Not too keen on horses or other humans.

The Weekly Poll has been put to bed for several reasons. Mainly, because it hasn't been weekly for a while, and so for this reason, amongst others, we felt it was better to start afresh with a new way to poll our members. Intriguing, right? More info soon!

Project Geocaching shows that UK finds are up by 6% over the past year and hides are down by 29% over the same period.  There certainly seems to be less notifications of new caches in my email inbox these days.  Make of it what you will....

Not sure but I know of two caches I've walked some distance to get:

'Eskdale/Scafell multi (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=71ba5d86-483b-43c9-90a0-63dbb63e5871)' around 11 miles but there were other caches I picked up on route only because I was passing them

and

'POETRY IN MOTION (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=82240e6e-286f-4c77-a773-126ea17a365c)' about 9.5 miles

Have to think about it a bit before I answer. I have walked quite far a number of times for a cache, not because the cache demanded it, but just because I decided to walk to it rather than drive to the closest parking spot. A particular cache is not jumping out at me as being the furthest walked though. I guess Mega Brek was a bit of a distance, but probably seemed more than it actually was due not being just straight walking, but I am not going to sit and plot the distance we did for that one just at the moment.

Longest I can remember for a single cache was WEREWOLF (http://coord.info/GC1NH60) which was around a 5 mile round trip, having just read my log from 2011 it mentions that I was hoping to do WHITESPACE (http://coord.info/GC1AF96) later in that year, still not been back for that one... :-[

Now thinking of this cache I went to get:

'Eskdale/Scafell multi (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=71ba5d86-483b-43c9-90a0-63dbb63e5871)' around 11 miles but there were other caches I picked up on route only because I was passing them

You could have a poll for maximum Total Ascent to get a cache :) The one above was about 3560ft from start point back to finish point.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Gackt on December 13, 2014, 09:05:35 am
Had a quick skim through my caches. I see a few caches I have done a combined cycle and walk from home and back to do whilst I haven't had a car, some of which have been about 20 miles round trips. But I have ticked the up to 6 miles for just walking only a round trip to a cache, which I have done a few times walking the dog from home.

Mega Brek does seem to be more than this at a glance at the routes, but we did with some other caches at the same time so I'll discount totally for this poll.

Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: gaz_zippy on January 28, 2015, 03:32:32 pm
When I was with Talk Talk it used to be around 1-2Mb/s. They were very unhelpful in me troubleshooting the slow speed, that was the best they could do and that was that, so I moved to BT around 2 years ago, I got it cheaper per month, no usage cap and BT sport thrown in for free, the speed jumped up to 6Mb/s immediately. Using the tool that TJ used I now get Download: 7.48 Mb/s, Upload: 0.479 Mb/s which is not too bad at all for my semi rural location, we don't have cable tv in our area so can only go down the phone line route, there are no plans for fibre in my area either, but at least at this speed I can use the catch-up tv services where before it was impossible, we had what Kevin Bacon is currently calling buffer face.

Just checked ours. Pretty typical average for this time of day at home:

Download 6.21Mb/s
Upload 1.86Mb/s

We're on an old BT plan. Unlimited data at up to 20Mb download. I have seen it quite a bit higher than 6, but never reached that 20 mark.

Yes, I think no UK Mega has had much more than around 2,000  ???

I read that next year's Geolympix were going to try to go Giga, but have decided against it since they might need people to pay to enter the venue to help with funding which clearly wouldn't be ideal.

Should have rules, as reviewers seem to have different ideas on the guidelines, which I've experienced, having had a cache rejected by one reviewer, only to have another reviewer not bat an eye lid over the issue the other reviewer rejected on :o
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Griff Grof on November 05, 2015, 06:49:04 pm
I agree, they're very subjective. I guess one example is the publication of CacheWalker events with a group walk beforehand - lack of consistency here as some reviewers don't allow it, others need convincing and some don't care at all! :o

After all, whilst they're 'guidelines', they are treated as rules. It would make more sense for them all to be clearer to avoid inconsistency.

I think good swag is important, where cache containers can fit some. I am not usually that interested in looking through contents myself, but for parents who are bringing young children along for the hunt, it can make it more exciting for the young ones when the box is found.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: tarmacjohn on June 12, 2018, 08:29:49 pm
I think generally the importance of swag has diminished, the current trend seems to be for micro geocaches which don't accommodate any swag.
That said, I tend to avoid micro's now just because I can't be arsed to hunt around for them. So, for me, swag is important but only because it means a bigger cache that I can find.
Title: Re: Weekly poll
Post by: Hogshunters on June 15, 2018, 09:54:48 am
I think good quality and clean swag is good when caching with the Grandchildren. But the cache and contents need to be well maintained. The joy on my Grandaughters face when she found a lovely hand painted pebble was lovely to watch.
To us 'oldies' it is of little interest, especially as some of the caches have inappropriate, damp, rusty items.  We often spend time cleaning out and removing dirty cache swag which has obviously been there for some considerable time. So all in all mixed feelings  :-\.
