What do you count as a 'find'?
« on: January 25, 2015, 06:58:06 pm »
Was just looking through my stats on Project-GC.

I've got 1780 finds on 1775 unique caches.

  • 3 of these are YOSMs
  • 2 of these are caches I've logged as 'found' twice as a newbie

Now, I don't know whether to delete logs for the two I logged twice, it's the right thing to do but it'll adjust my milestones  :o

And then there's the Lab cache I found, so my D/T grid thinks that I've found 1779  :o

Are YOSMs really cache finds?

What do you count as finds and what advice would you give me?  :D

I count any unique find.

YOSM's are OK
Lab caches (whatever they are) are OK

I think your figures are still wrong though, you appear to have 2 YOSM's and 3 duplicate logs. I would correct the duplicates, but it's obviously entirely up to you

Thanks @tarmacjohn, how do you know which are your duplicate logs?

And is there anyway to lock in milestones?

Click on 'Profile' then 'find bad logs', put in you GC name and click 'Filter', that should bring up the screen below

Under duplicate logs you have 2 finds on the 1st one (YOSM) and then 3 caches with duplicate logs, click on the GC code to see which they are

Thank you, it's odd since I have logged the YOSM three times, just checked again on GC.com and that is the case - why is Project-GC only showing two?

I'll delete the duplicate logs shortly, although does anyone know how to lock in my milestone caches before I do so?

Sorry meant to answer that

Click on Statistics, then click on milestones. That should show what you need.

Griff - your milestones are on the milestone tab. Do you see the different tabs running along the top?

Don't use Project-gc as it doesn't give the same stats as GSAK which is odd because it looks great otherwise.

YOSM duplicates - I have just one so keep this as a count, as they are in different locations like any virtual.
Lab caches - GS still don't know how to deal with these, so until they are FULLY included in your profile, i.e. are in your My Finds PQ, which they aren't at the moment, I don't count them on my stats.

YOSMs count... Unless you're logging Dovers Hill as a find every time you go there!

Milestones can be 'Locked' from the stats tab. http://www.geocaching.com/my/statistics.aspx

Project GC will give you an idea of duplicate/double logs, but I think it takes awhile to update after deleting...
(I wonder if it reads Archived logs?)

Haven't set or found a lab cache, so I don't count 'em!  ;)

eta
http://www.yosm.org.uk/cacher_stats.php has you with 3 found.
(I think P-GC shows 2 logs, as you have the Found log + 2 more?)

Ah, yes, I was looking at the top tabs  :D

That's odd - I think GSAK is still PC-only  ???  :(

I guess YOSMs are fine, although there's always the argument that there's not actually a virtual permanently at these locations - @walktall, if you had more than one would you count the duplicate logs too?

Thanks @Bear and Ragged, the three I have are: Dovers Hill, Sugar Loaf and Blorenge.

Yes, I think it said it updates on a weekly basis?

What's annoying is that GS count Lab Caches as finds but Project-GC don't - they should at least recognise it as part of your count if Geocaching.com do  :-\

But they are permanent, once they are added to the YOSM list, you can go to that location and claim it at any time :)

I have found two YOSMs and yes they do count to my total :)

GS don't include them in your "My Finds" PQ, will they ever or will they just disappear like another idea they had ::) ??? I presume this lack of full integration by GS of Lab caches into your finds list, is why Project-GC can't include them.

I use the site: My Geocaching Profile, for some of its functionality, but due to the fact that GS does not include Lab caches in the output of your "My Finds" PQ, they now have a manual box where you can say how many Lab caches you've found.

I have 34 YSM finds and have them all as separate rows in GSAK so that the correct placed date, D/T, county etc... are recorded. I have no Lab cache finds as they just seemed like another crackpot idea, I cannot comment on the quality of them having not done one, but cannot understand why they are not included in your stats as they are no longer a new phenomenon.

I also have my GC.com stats turned off and rely on a GSAK macro that I just run, fully automated to upload to my profile so very little required for me to do except kick it off and then click a save button once it has finished doing its number crunching.

As for duplicate logs, other than YSM ones just delete them, then if your milestone caches are important to you simply lock them as described by others earlier in this thread.

Right, have deleted my duplicate logs (other than the YOSMs) and have dropped to 1,777  :)

Locked my milestones in on Geocaching.com BUT it seems like there's no way of doing it on Project-GC, so will have to edit them when/if they add that functionality.

I really don't know what's happening with Lab caches. I've found 1, and I would delete my log BUT I do still see it as a proper find, it was just like a virtual with a nice twist to it - so I don't see why GS and the stats sites aren't properly considering them. Plus, it's always nice to have the icon... especially since it's probably going to be a rare one since I reckon they'll ditch the idea soon.

Or will they remove all trace of them if they are scrapped?  ;) ::)

GS seem to like to 'Pull them out' for Events, especially the Megas... So don't think they will drop them soon.

However, as there seems to be cachers who chase, and seem happy to get the 'codeword' to log the Lab cache, it would make the icon 'less unique'

The Lab caches... something to discuss in a separate thread I feel. But whilst it is mentioned here, I haven't found any of the ones set up for Megas as I have only been to one Mega. Originally I thought that was what they were going to be for, at least to begin with. I also understood "wrongly" how they would work. I thought they would be like a cross between Munzees and temporary caches. Like Munzees in that you would need to be at a specific location to be able to log them, and temporary caches in that they would be set only for a short period. Only the later seems to be the case. If both ideas I have just written had been combined then it would stop people for the most part getting the codes and logging them. But... oh well. I enjoyed setting the one lab cache I hid for Yorkshire Yellow, and loved going to hunt down the lab cache he hid for me which has now been hidden again as trad for all to find.

Groundpeak just need to get their act together with what they are going to do with these properly, including the stats. Grrr. Anyways, back on topic...

I have only found the 1 Lab cache, and count it as a find. I will be very upset if Groundspeak ever do a 'Challenge cache wipe out' on them.

I have 2 YOSM finds, I count them both as finds. I don't actively search them out, but the two I have found were in very different locations and I enjoyed them muchly.

Separately, but sort of related to this topic, I do not log 'attends' on events hosted by myself, and so do not get any finds for those. I am in a very small minority as far as that practice, and have to say I have no quibbles with anyone who does the opposite as events seem to be treated quite different to normal trads
