That's one type of cache I always have on my map, so if I pass close, I go and find it.

Found two this week just gone, not yet log yet  :)

Lady Chatterley's Cache and

Help! Peter's in the Rushes. (S Notts) which claims to be "UKs 4th oldest Virtual, Englands 3rd oldest" placed: 12 Sept 2001

I don't think that I've found a virtual since the Geolympix 11 in 11 two years ago  :o

But it is a cache type I enjoy finding, and I think that them being Grandfathered assures us that the 4,791 remaining are at truly special locations.

I still wish they'd allow them to be submitted and reviewed specially like Earthcaches, as there are some spots which are notable and worthy of a cache, but there's no where to place a container.

I actually can't think of a virtual ever being archived - surely they can't, as most locations stay forever  ???

I have only found 12 virtuals to date. All of them have been in really interesting locations. I have to say truthfully that Avebury Stone Circle (Wilts) wasn't best one out of the few in that area though. The same day I found the close by Silbury Hill, Avebury (Wiltshire) and West Kennett Longbarrow (Wilts) which were two outstanding locations. The longbarrow was the largest I have ever been in. The walk to the Stone Circle was nice and passed quite a few stones, but the final location was a little disappointing, but I may just of felt this because of the awesomeness of the other two I had done earlier that day.

Virtuals do get archived. I was a little sad that one of the closest to my home location was not long ago, Glawster Central. Does anyone else know of any that were archived and why?

I've now found 59 Virtuals, hope to find many more ;D

Virtuals I've done now archived -

UK - County Compass - South (Bucks) was

One of a series of four caches placed at the geographical extremities of Buckinghamshire

but

Quote
As the final cache location has been permanently compromised, the point in having this cache no longer exists and as I don't consider it worthy of being a stand-alone cache I'm archiving it

Glawster Central

Quote
Well 10 years is a good innings for any cache but I think this one has run its course. Thanks for all the logs over the years ...

Very poor reason why this was archived :(

Hungarian - Hungarian House of Parliament

Quote
It's a translation of a geocache listed at geocaching.hu, and doesn't exists anymore. I adopted the cache at the hungarian site, and I changed its type to traditional box. I like to report it as a new cache, because I can't get in contact with the owner to adopt it.

Locationless Virtual !! - Fast Forward - Such den Bulli

German translation (12 Oct 11 archive log):

Quote
Whenever many people come together, will necessarily increase the number of full posts. When geocaching which is quite obviously agrees.
For each cache has its time. Especially the time when he has to go to the archive, because the mass of "geocachers", which has brought with it the unspeakable Geohype the past few years, can not handle it.
Morning, the cache would have been seven years old. Before he is still nursing care, he gets the coup de grace today.

Now the idiots hear of you hopefully finally on to parts rumzufingern on the bus and destroy them, where "<- 230 cm GC" is.

We've got 19, but most were pretty average!  The ones we particularly remember are:
GCKYTO - such a shame its archived, we met them twice, lovely couple!
GC553C - a stunning old chapel in Dorset.
GCG8BA - a bit of road in Ayrshire that is not what it seems, a deffo visit if you're going to this years Mega...
GC5EF5 - a bit of a hoot in Galloway, you need to visit it to believe it...
The YOSM (GC45CC) cache we have done, but only once as it screws the GC figures up!
If they are about we will always go for them though....

Some numbers.
(After all, it IS all about the numbers!  :D)

UK Virts still active. 192

UK Virts I have found 33
excludes YOSM  with 6 Finds

3 at the moment have Temporary Disabled on them. The longest one Finsbury Circus, due to Boris and TFL with the construction of the new London Cross Rail project. Last found Nov 2011.

Have a list of 18 Archived...
Either area has changed significantly, CO has given up and archives - or reviewer archives due to armchair logs and CO not logging in to carry out maintenance.

* There are 1 or 2 caches called Virts, but are listed as Traditionals, due to going missing very early on in the game...
They seem to be surviving, probably due to their age, and no-one is kicking up a fuss.

I have found 83 virtual caches, although 25 of those are YOSM finds. I have found virtual caches in five countries too.

Sherlock 7 - The booty! (GC2828) Is a micro, but it has six feeder caches all listed as multi caches but are in fact virtual caches.

One of my favourties:
University Challenge 5 (munch munch) (GCHXGP)

One of the strangest:
Virtually On The Beach (Southport) (GCEED9)

I think I've only found 7 Virtual caches  :o :o :o :o - which surprises me, as it is one of my favourite cache types! Considering all Virtual cache types, I have still only found 19  :-\ Looks like I have a new focus!  :D

My favourite was my first Barcelona, and I agree with @SangueG that Avebury Stone Circle Wilts' GZ wasn't quite as nice as the route to it and the surrounding area- I still think it's a great virtual, though!

Question... have reviewers not picked up on Virtuals listed as other cache types??!!  ???

They probably have.
But if there's no problem with the cache, and no ones kicks up a fuss, why start making waves?

Out of interest, does anyone know who's found the most virtuals in the UK?
