Should Challenge Caches have a unique icon?
« on: May 28, 2014, 08:33:41 am »
People have been discussing this on twitter, our account has even joined in as has @SangueG  :)

Quote
@Geolympix: Due to their unique nature, #Challenge #geocaches should have their own Cache Type/Icon. Agree or disagree? Discuss!

@SangueG: @Geolympix @GoGeocaching You mean like this cache http://t.co/tuJ7ta5ZEm where you have to meet a certain criteria to log? I'd agree

What do YOU think?  ???

(I'll post my own opinion later)

There are more and more Challenge type caches which get bunched into the Puzzle icon, which is already a bit blurred what type of cache you will be doing: a bonus - collecting info from other caches, more of a multi finding info, a Challenge cache and oh yes an actual puzzle to work out.

So, I would say yes, a new icon for Challenge caches but this would need a clear definition what constitutes a Challenge cache.

At the moment the only thing that identifies a challenge cache is the 'Unknown' type and the word 'Challenge' to be present in the title, any other cache could meet this criteria too.

I think yes, it should have its own type, as should a bonus cache, but instead it seems that rather than what is a good idea and what the community wants instead we get lab caches and a new cache type for a giga event, other questionable icons are available too. So it more than likely won't happen as no one will take responsibility of ensuring that 100% of the caches already published have the type changed, there are still historic bonus caches out there with a type of 'Multi'.

I too think they should have their own icon. As you said, @gaz_zippy , the type overlaps incredibly - so much so that it has got to a point that the Unknown type is literally that - unknown - aka all else  :D Perhaps Bonus caches should only be published as Multi's? Anyway, seeing the icon gives you little indication as to what the cache involves, as there are so many variations of the type!

But there really are a LOT of Challenge Caches springing up, and (after completing the challenge) it would obviously be nice to be rewarded with a shiny, unique icon  ;D - this could also encourage more people to find these sorts of caches!

As you said, they have decided to focus their attention on Lab Caches, which seem pointless in every way possible...

Maybe we'll have a new icon one day? Perhaps they'll set up some sort of feedback site to listen to the wider community - oh, wait, they did that and they shut it down as there were too many suggestions they didn't agree with  ;D ;D ;D
