GS have done it again >:( OK they decided they were wrong - cachers asked for one thing GS provided some thing else - but then all the work that cachers have done for Challenges is just wiped off the site totally.

What on earth were/are they thinking off  >:( - I see why cachers move to other geocaching sites :o

It's for that sort of ineptitude that I cancelled my premium membership.

I should look into opencaching.  As a coder, I could probably add something (besides my caches, that is).

Yes it's almost as if they don't deserve our money  :o Having said that, they do a lot... Well, run a website, not the game. And I think for the features you get for being a PM it's a little overpriced in my view  :-\ But it's a super website, with a huge database of caches to fit every mood - the biggest community too... Sadly I think all the other sites started up too late. Geocaching is like a different game on sites other than GC.com  :o I wouldn't leave the GC.com site, whatever they do, and I still would like my premium membership as it does support their great efforts - even if they get it wrong sometimes, but we all make mistakes  :)

PS - what is your name on GC.com, cx6?

Perhaps we should all join another geocaching site and start placing caches in the area ???

I'm like you Griff, I will not leave geocaching.com but they keep putting their feet in their mouths :o

Or go one step further and start hosting hidden caches on this site ;D

What I get out of paying groundspeak currently, is: Being able to award favourites. Having a few more caches available to me to do (this was my original reason for paying up). And PQs, though I honestly have only run a few over the past year. Yes I know premiums have other extras, but those are the few that I am making use of.

I think the $30/year is reasonable value.  I don't pay simply because I don't like the way GS conducts its business.  If everyone felt the same and GS went under, it wouldn't bother me.  Whoever stepped into the void would surely give a damn about their customers more than GS does.

The first UK Challenge?  :o  :-\ Another clue please!  :D

I think that all another site needs to take off is an active community like on GC.com  :) I like how Cotswold Caching hosts a couple of caches oh there too - I thought that was a very good idea  ;D

Hosting caches; I don't think we'll ever rival GC.com, but that wasn't my intention. More it was a way of providing a little extra fun to do outside. For the very local Cirencester one I though it would be good for families who can't travel far, to hide and seek it during school holidays, that didn't really work, but I will hide another and try again soon.

cx6, for that first UK challenge, if I remember correctly of it's history, it must of also of been one of the first to be archived by the public and then un-archived again by groundspeak. Would I be right in saying that?

My thought was if we also started to used, for arguments sake, opencaching.org.uk, we could start to build up numbers of caches in this area and be able to have cache types that GC.com will not allow.

Don't expect to get to the loft heights of GC.com but you have to start somewhere. We could get some really good caches that we could not have placed due to GC.com's limitations.

opencaching.org.uk also has Moving cache type ;D

Quote
A moving cache changes its location after each find. Everyone who found it, moves it to a new location and publishes the new coordinates in its log in the service. Log a note of your intent to hunt for it so others know you going after it. If you find it and take it, please log your find quickly. If possible leave an indicator like an "X" on the ground in its place to signal to a following geocacher that it's gone. When you rehide it, please conceal it well and make sure your coordinates are accurate. When you post that you have rehidden it, please include the new coordinates and new difficulty/terrain rating. When you report the new location, please make a new entry (Post a Note) so owner cache receive an email message to alert of the new position.

I would happily cross-list all of my caches on oc-uk, but those running the site have declared it "pointless" to do so.  I think it's far from pointless.  By having an entry on gc.com as well, you are bagging the space.  And how else does oc-uk ever think it's going to grow?

I've now only got two oc-uk caches but like to keep them separate from gc.com.
