New Event Type: GIGA
« on: April 23, 2014, 04:13:05 pm »
Apologies if there is already something on CC  ::)

Quoting the Groundspeak Weekly Newsletter:
"A Giga-Event is the newest geocache type. Attended by 5,000 or more geocachers, it’s like a Mega-Event of mega proportions. The geocache type shows a new level of appreciation to events that engage, entertain and inform geocachers on a massive scale.
While we know that the metric system prefix giga stands for 1,000,000,000, the name arose from inside the geocaching community and it stuck. So we co-opted the term to stay in line with our current system of events and Mega-Events. And of course, the name Five-Thousand-Event didn’t have the same ring to it."

Funnily enough, think we ran a poll about this last year... Did we think, back then, it was a good idea? A resounding no.

But do we now?

Personally, I think it's not a good idea - I don't think UK mega attendance has even broke 2,000 yet   :o

Things move on, it was inevitable that the mega would be outgrown.  I believe Simply Paul is thinking of running a coach to Munich, which may be a way to keep costs down, apparently Munich is an expensive city to visit, there is an additional 8 euro entrance fee to get into the main event.

We would not dismiss the idea out of hand, well see how things pan out.  Many people poo-pooed the first Mega at Harrogate, but that was still one of the best of the 5 mega's we have attended.

It wouldn't surprise me that Simply Paul is organising something for the Giga :)

Would be nice to visit Munich again but this time as a cacher. It's a lovely city :) I've found a return flight there is only £140 and on CC they've been talking about the cost of driving there with five sharing the cost and hopefully some of the driving  ;D

I really like the idea of a Giga event and have been saying this for ages so I'm really glad, sounds really exciting  8) and would agree with H about the Harrogate mega too  :)

It would be good if there were a group to go together, perhaps on SP's coach if that happens, from around here.  Anyone else interested?

WT - interesting price on the flight.  I guess it would be cheaper on a coach but a block hotel booking would be the real saving perhaps?

Donna - few more k's on the Mondeo, get Mark in the driving seat again?   ;)

I would love to go but having no Passport will probably make it just that little bit too expensive
