Most difficult cache you've tried to/ have found?
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:36:53 pm »
Sometime next week, I shall be setting out to try and find this cache,
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=4940fdd7-4e43-440e-a6e4-0247451ba1d4
It's a Difficulty 4 and Terrain 4.5, and it will be the highest in both those fields if I find it. What's the most difficult cache you've tried to/ have found?

This is by far far far the most difficult cache I've tried and found Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate :o :o :o ;D

I was with a group of people having a go at some of the Below Above caches and then we went onto this one, hmmmm, a bit outside my comfort zone but I gave it a go and managed to complete it. I even ended up helping some of the other cachers  ;D :o

These are all 5/5 caches 8)

I would class this cache (Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate) as potholing, so great fun if you are into that but not a place if you don't get on with confined spaces and even though it was relatively short run to the cache location, there was a lot of exertion getting there but also getting back.

To start with, you enter through a low height (about 2ft) passage and then down a chimney drop, using a rope. I remember a very large rock you had to climb over and drop down the other side; this was where some of the party called it a day and waited there for the rest of us to complete the route. There was one point that was very tight to get through and you had to commit to it, as there was a small drop on the other side, which meant you squeezed through and dropped about a foot or so. The last obstacle, was a 10-12ft climb up into the cache 'cave'.

The cache itself was just a standard box but it certainly was an adventure I will not forget in a hurry; this may be due to the trepidation I felt when I saw what I was about to do or the exhilaration of completing it and finding that I was helping others through ;D

First went up to Kirkcudbright with a girlfriend with the intention of caching. Warmed up with Auchencairn Amble 4D/3T. The cliff side path freaked her, and she took an inland route. The ultimate gaol of the trip was to get onto Hestan Island 5D/5T, but the tide needed to be out.

We got up early and drove round to the given parking. Walked for nearly two hours to see tide was still covering The Rack causeway, our route on to the Island and the prize. Not a low enough tide. To get to the water's edge we had to scramble down through scrub across rocks on to coastal mud. Not that day.

Returned in June, on my own with a kayak and paddled out from Balcary Bay at high water. Hopefully the currents would be slack and the estimated 40 minute crossing would be unaffected by the tide coming in. Cache found. Log signed. Photos taken for Waymarking and logs.

Now for the return crossing before tide ebbed and sucked me out to Isle of Man. Slight choppy sea decreased as I got nearer launch point and under shelter of the land.

As I loaded kayak back on my car, families were playing at the water's edge. Little did they know where I had just been and done.

Further finders all had an adventure getting on to the island. I returned with itschopper when the tide was out and walked across the Rack causeway, which is a mussel bed.

As walk tall, Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate is physically the hardest cache I have found. walk tall has described it well. I have never been so exhausted by one cache. I felt more tired squeezing and climbing my way through those.. how long was it, about 400m, maybe less? than I was after a 30 mile hike. Got a lot of bruises too.

Recently attempted, and technically completed too Earnanęs, žęs wyrmes denn. I haven't posted a 'find' though, only a note, as although I signed the log I didn't manage to complete one section. I can't say any more or it would give spoilers. All I can say is it is similar to the other cache mentioned above, but harder. There are quite a few other fantastic 5/5s around that same area. I have completed a few, but the two I mentioned I found the hardest.

I have found a couple of 5 star difficulty, but which have a low star terrain rating. The virtual at Imber village was one fantastic day out!  :) A 5 star difficulty because it is only open to the public for a few days a year.

Yes the virtual at Imber village is a great place to visit, well worth it and glad I managed a visit before I left the Andover area but it isn't that far from the Cotswolds ;D

I think the most difficult cache I have gone for and found is this one:

The Cave Troll's Lair http://coord.info/GCTDF6

My log and photos here: http://coord.info/GL5WTMRG

I hope to have ago at the sequel next time I am down that way, but just finding the path is a struggle by all accounts!
