Cold War Cache
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:01:41 pm »
You've probably done it anyway, but for those who haven't, this cache is a must do! Found it a month ago though, but never too late to recommend!

GC1782Z

Wrighty took me to this one after a good series, on the way home, felt a bit scary going down into the bunker, but a well stocked cache, and interesting history.

Also, outside the bunker, were amazing views (for the people who don't want to go down) to enjoy (though the cache is actually inside the bunker, hidden quite well) and the whole thing was topped off by seeing five red kites putting on what seemed like a 'show' - amazing.

So, yes, something unique and different, never done something quite like it before!

Check out this  photo Wrighty took of me coming out of the bunker:

Can definitely second the recommendation of this cache. It was the first cache I found subterranean, and set me looking for others. I have been back to this one to take others to experience and everyone has enjoyed it.

A short distance walk along the Ridgeway from there will also take you to another great cache - Wayland's Smithy.

I hope no one minds my necromancy of this old post?  :)

I saw this and it looks pretty neat, and is only 6-7 miles from where I live. It's my birthday next week so I have a day off with the family... and I get to choose what I want to do  ;D

I'm going to do this cache, and the one at Wayland's smithy as a special birthday treat. I'm not telling the rest of team Maschast where we're going though - It'll be a nice suprise!

It's a good one to do. If you want to explore inside, remember to take a torch :)

It is a fun cache! A tip though, don't park up right close to it, and if you see the farmer working in the surrounding fields then go do Wayland's then come back to this one. He has been known to get a bit funny with people popping down in there.

I like Wayland's too. There's a certain aura surrounding it. The cache itself is quite some way from the burial chamber.

Just for info - we did Cold War Cache GC32REK in Notts recently, for a milestone, if you fancy a very easy 5/5 and want to see what its like down a black hole!
The bunker is dirty and smelly inside, looks like someone has lit a fire in there, but safe, provided you take care on the steel ladder going down.

I find these posts interesting. I have visited quite a few. If I find my way up there sometime I will take a look at GC32REK. I wouldn't say it's a 5/5, but ROC post caches are still fun to do. The one near Swindon has recently been archived, which is a shame. It had many fav points. I know of a few ROC posts close to my home location but all are on private land and so can't put caches in them sadly.

They are interesting, we did a cache by a locked one in North Yorks, on the way to the Harrogate Mega, if I remember correctly.  Agreed, no way is this a 5/5, I reckon a 3/3 perhaps, but this stuff is so subjective...
Mind you, if you needed a 5/5 for the D/T grid this would be worth a punt as a chap with one leg did it if you look back through the logs!

Shame that this has been archived I have always wanted to pop into a hole in the ground and my eldest son Oliver (and to some extent middle son Sam) would love and explore underground.

Been interested in these ROC bunkers since seeing the entrance hatch to one in Stoke Orchard near Bishops Cleeve on regular trips to the landfill with parents as a kid.

Will have to keep an eye open for another one like this maybe one day the farmer will let people back on his land to visit this one again.

Here's one we did with Mr & Mrs wrighty last week:
http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCQ0J7_blakemere-hill-r-o-c-bunker?guid=31829d85-1429-4222-b40a-7c3e374618da
Just outside Hereford.
Cache page says its not open but the rings that secure the lid have been cut, it's in much better condition than the one near Nottingham.
The cache is not in the bunker though.
Good Luck!
H.

The Private R.O.C. Nuclear Bunker at Broadway Tower is sometimes open to the public for a small fee.

@btco there's a couple more around here you can take a look in. Not with caches in though. One is not far from @Wrighty's Hangman`s Stone, just off a footpath, but very poor condition as you can see from a few pics of mine on his cache page.

There's another at Kemble, but that one is on private property. I took a look at that one at night so no one stopped me. A few pics here.

I have a cache by this one, but it is locked up most of the time now.

Plenty of caches actually in other types of holes in the Cotswolds. Just tap someone up here if you need help pointing towards any.
