AR (Augmented Reality) caches
« on: July 01, 2018, 10:01:30 pm »
I hadn't realised that Groundspeak are looking at other methods of finding caches using Augmented Reality apps to guide you there.

2.19. Augmented Reality (AR) and geocaching

From June 06th, 2018 to Sept 06th, 2018 you can submit a Mystery Cache for review that requires the finder to use an Augmented Reality (AR) app to find the cache. This is an experiment to see how the geocaching community will use AR technology. Any caches published within this experiment may be archived at a later date by Geocaching HQ if circumstances change.

At the end of this time period, Geocaching HQ will decide if the published caches will be grandfathered or archived.

I tried this cache AR_Geohound Hunt as a FTF and to try out this new AR approached. The AR worked it got me to GZ, I just couldn't find the cache :o :(

This is the only one I've tried and don't know what the capabilities are but it gave me co-ordinates which I put into my Garmin, once there I hit the Ready (got there) button, it asked a multi-choice question, I got it correct and it gave me the next co-ordinates to go to, I put them into my Garmin, etc, until it got you to the cache. That was it, the camera had gone into power save, so the Geohound (in this case) was just on a black background.

Anyone else tried one?

Here's a screen shot of Geohound with this post in the background  8)

Interesting.

Since my little play with Pokemon Go, and quite a while before that.. Monstercache, I haven't had a go at any AI type GPS games. Can I ask, did you need to use mobile data for this, or did you just need to download the game to your phone/GPSr and play offline?

Whichever, it is nice to see some new styles of caches placed on the Groundspeak site.

Did a quick test just now, with this particular AR. The app will not start without a data connection but once started, you can turn off data and it runs to the end.

I did find it handy to have my GPS, as I put the co-ordinates into that to move to the next location.

I had a quick look at the AR builder, lots you can do and the CO said it was a lot easier then Wherigo :)

I have just intalled the Metaverse app on my phone, but it doesn't like it. It downloaded and installed ok, but when I start it, the phone freezes. Think this one is going to have to wait till my next phone upgrade.
