CacheWalker's Geocaching Acronyms and Glossary

New to Geocaching? Like many pastimes, Geocaching has its own language! The jargon is always evolving, but here are some of the most commonly used terms along with some slightly more obscure ones. Also included in italics are some CacheWalker acronyms, so if you've been wondering what 'CWSBC' or 'ABH' mean, see below!  :)

If you think the list is missing anything, feel free to let me know by posting below and I'll add it!  :)

  • ABH - Another Bloomin' Hill. A pharse coined by bikermel76 while tackling one of Wrighty's caches.
  • Archived - Caches that no longer exist.   
  • BOT - Bowl Of Tree or Base Of Tree
  • BYOP - Bring Your Own Pen
  • Cacher - also known as Geocacher, Terracacher or Opencacher. Someone who finds caches.
  • Challenge cache - requires cachers to to meet a requirement before logging.
  • CITO - Cache In Trash Out event
  • CND - Cache 'n' Dash
  • CO - Cache Owner
  • CW - CacheWalker
  • CWFC - CacheWalker Footballer's Challenge, our Travel Bug race for 2014.
  • CWSBC - CacheWalker SuperBike Challenge, our annual Travel Bug race.
  • D/T - Difficulty / Terrain. The rating system for geocaches.
  • Disabled - CO's can temporarily disable cache listings if they require maintenance.
  • DNA – Did Not Attempt
  • DNF - Did Not Find
  • DNL – Did Not Look
  • FF – First Finder (this term tends to be used only on terracaching.com)
  • FLTF - Full Log To Follow
  • FP – Favourite Point. Premium Member's can award these to their favourite geocaches.
  • FTF - First To Find. Bragging rights that you were the first to find a newly placed cache.
  • GC - Geocoin. Custom minted coins which are trackable. They can be placed in caches, or collected.
  • Geocaching - A real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.
  • GPS - Global Positioning System
  • GPSr - Global Positioning System Receiver
  • GPX - GPS eXchange Format (A file type used by GPSr's)
  • GZ - Ground Zero (refers to the vicinity of the cache's hiding spot)
  • ICP – Ivy Covered Post
  • ICT – Ivy Covered Tree
  • LHS - Left Hand Side
  • LN - Left Nothing
  • LOC – LOCations file format (a simple XML file, Extensible Markup Language) for representing a set of geographic locations.
  • LPC - Light Pole Cache
  • MKH – Magnetic Key Holder
  • MTT – Multi Trunked Tree
  • Muggle - A non-geocacher
  • Muggled - the discovery of a geocache by a muggle.
  • NQF - Nice Quick Find
  • NV - Nice View
  • P&G - Park & Grab
  • PAF - Phone A Friend
  • PQ - Pocket Query
  • QEF - Quick Easy Find
  • Reviewer - Community volunteers who review geocaches before they are published online.
  • RHS - Right Hand Side
  • Signature item - Something unique that a geocacher places in every cache they find
  • SL - Signed Log
  • SLTN - Signed Log Took Nothing
  • SOOP - Something Out Of Place
  • STF – Second To Find
  • SWAG - Stuff We All Get
  • TB - Travel Bug. Trackable items which travel from cache to cache.
  • TBD - Travel Bug Drop
  • TFTC - Thanks For The Cache
  • TFTE - Thanks For The Event
  • TFTFTF - Thanks For The First To Find (or TF3)
  • TFTH/T4TH - Thanks For The Hide
  • TN - Took Nothing
  • TNLN - Took Nothing, Left Nothing
  • TOTT - Tool Of The Trade
  • TTF – Third To Find
  • Twixmas - The period between Christmas and New Year. A CacheWalker event is traditionally held every Twixmas.
  • UPR – Unnatural Pile of Rocks
  • UPS - Unusual Pile of Sticks
  • YAPIDKA – Yet Another Park I Didn’t Know About

As I come across any, I'll add.

Question: Should the definition of Cacher be changed, as they might have found a Terracache or Opencache or yes, a Geocache?
