Geocaching App update?
« on: September 13, 2015, 10:41:42 am »
Just wondering if anyone knows why the paid Geocaching App has been neglected in comparison to the free Geocaching Intro one?

The Intro one has the Messaging system, and a redesigned interface. I'd have thought it would have been the other way round  :D

Any ideas why and when the paid app will be updated?  ???

They are planning on dropping the Paid For app.

The trial app will keep having 'things' added, eg different cache types, and further 'options' will be opened on the app to users who pay for Premium Membership...

I think they are working on what they started with the windoze phone app, eg., shows minimum, until you 'upgrade' to Premium, then you can see everything.

Hence no Updates to the paid for app, and it will be dropped eventually.  :(

(A BAD move, in my opinion.)

What??!!  :o

How can that be? The paid app was £5.99 if I remember correctly. That's one of the most expensive apps I've ever bought.

Surely they can't drop it... Have they announced this @Bear and Ragged?

If they do drop it, the people who have paid should appeal for a refund :D Surely it's meant to be the app people have invested in which gets the headline features. It doesn't make sense - I wonder what those at the App Store/Play Store would make of this?  :D

I didn't know that either B&R, thanks for the info.

Think my original comment was about right then: GS ::)

In the GS forums, it was asked why there were plenty of updates for the "Trial" app, but none for the "Paid For" app.

One of the lackeys replied.
The gist was:
Quote
Writing/codeing the paid for app was such a pain, it's easier to 'Add' the required bits to the 'Free' app.
Hopefully the Free app will be able to do "Everything" and a few other things (eg Messaging via app) that the paid for does now.

The free app (Note it's now the Free app, and not the Trial app!) will then be "The APP" and things will be unlocked by paying for Premium Membership...

I have the Paid For app. I've had it a few years, so consider I've got my monies worth!
The Free App can't save caches/ lists for off-line use... Yet!

Why is Message Center not available in the paid Geocaching app?

We’ve made the decision to direct our app development resources toward the Geocaching Intro app to create an introductory geocaching experience on mobile that can be unlocked into a full geocaching experience with Premium membership. This decision was made in response to the many requests from our players to include a full geocaching mobile experience with Premium membership.

Additionally, the Message Center is a social feature intended to be used by all geocachers. To ensure a great social experience, we believe it’s essential that this feature be accessible to all by providing it to basic members in the free app.

It just doesn't make sense to me!  :o  :D

If they've got these plans, they should surely remove the £5.99 paid app. Someone might be browsing and think they're definitely into caching, so will invest in the paid app - typically, paid apps boast more features, the free ones are normally lite versions, so this is what many people are likely to do. Or, someone who has become addicted once using the free app may decide to upgrade assuming the paid one is better.

@Bear and Ragged, have you downloaded the free one to use instead? Is it worth it?
