How about a CITO event?
« on: February 02, 2013, 04:38:53 pm »
The 11th Annual CITO weekend is scheduled for April 20 and 21, 2013.

How about a joint Cotswold Caching and CacheWalker (or one or the other) event to clean up a messier part of our area of outstanding natural beauty?

Thoughts?  ???

A short answer for the moment.. yes I am interested to do something like this. It has been on my mind for a while to arrange one of these, but I thought it best to have a stab at a normal event first, and as you know that will done and dusted quite shortly.

Obviously needs a lot more thought, discussion, and input from others, but if there is a strong interest then count me in on whatever we may do.

Where in the area could we hold a CITO, first of all  ???

It could be a popular event with the fact that they're so rare and all seem to be far away   :D (plus, it will be CITO weekend so some will be wanting the souvenir!)

Can't think of the name of the place, it is the country park where Glourious Gloucestershire is.

Crickley Hill Country Park, I think  ???

Sounds good. A nice location. But is there any litter there? Don't make it be like the Geolympix CITO which hardly had anything to pick up  :D

In theory CITO's take more planning as you have to talk to the land owners/council... Do you have a rapport with them, walk tall, due to the Glorious Gloucestershire and your picnic event??

I've not seen much of an issue with litter at Crickley Hill. I can ask the Rangers there if we feel it would be a good site and find out if there is an issue with litter?

The few times I have been there I don't remember seeing any litter. It is a great location for a normal event though, great views, lots of parking, and public conveniences.

This way, a few parts of disused canals are looking shabby. A part of the Thames and Severn, not far from where I am holding my event on Saturday, I was quite upset the other day to see someone had fly tipped a lot of junk into the canal. And the path along another disused stretch of canal between Cirencester industrial estate and Siddington Village often has a lot of litter, and waste packaging bits which I guess blow over from the nearby units.

Are there any similar stretches of old waterways / railway lines up your way that need attention?

I meant to say that the Rangers at Crickley Hill didn't feel there is a litter problem there.

I'm trying to think of some where near by (in the Cotswolds) that has a litter problem and would be worth doing but having problems thinking of any where :o :)

Do we need to go to a more built-up area of the Cotswolds to find litter?

Other than the canal I mentioned, nothing else is springing to mind as to having a major litter problem. I see odd bits of litter here and there, but not enough to organise a cito event for. The immediate area where I live is looked after by, not just the local council, but also the Chesterton Community Project, who walk the area litter picking, and so it's rare to see mass amounts of litter.

From Cotswold Caching, Pir8sold&new - Putting here as it's where the main discussion is taking place.

Hi All,

I know I'm new here and in the caching community, but after sending a message to Gackt yesterday, he suggested joining the forums.

I had previous looked around for any local CITO events, and after completing a local series to me on Sunday loved the walk, but was sad about the amount of dumped litter. I wondered if a CITO would qualify in helping the local spot, allow people to complete a small series and for it not to take a whole day to achieve a 2.5 ish mile walk along a countryside road on a sunday morning?

I've contacted the Cache series owners for any thoughts on it, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or tips. The Series I have in question is the Common Road Series near Malmesbury. Also to add another cache to the route as an encouragement.

Before raising it with local authorities, I wanted to ask others what they thought.

Cheers

Any thoughts  ???

I think this could be a good idea, and the fact that it's a circular walk with caches to find is nice  :D
