Thick or Not?
« on: April 10, 2012, 10:35:14 pm »
Am I being thick ..or not?

Is there a way to load a walk with multiple caches in one hit to a GPS, .......without either doing the caches on an individual basis, or creating a pocket query for that area.

Also is there a clever way of logging a walk with multiple caches more easily than going into each log, one by one?

How much for each thing?

I have suggested the idea to Groundspeak... there is a way (I think) if there isn't too much caches....

GSAK is the answer using the new API functions; get caches based on a circle, rectangle or list of GC numbers; and publishing multiple logs is simple also.

That's  what I found too, but JJ just beat me to posting it  :D

I think it's a shame people do stuff like that though. Personally, I don't agree with writing the same log for a group of caches (copy and pasted, or TFTC) as every cache is different, and the CO has made an effort for every single one - whether that is hiding it, maintaining it or brining people to a nice spot each time. It is because of this that I find it rude to copy and paste, I always try and write something different for each one. As a CO myself, my rule (and others use this too) is that two consecutive copy and pasted or "TFTC" logs = me archiving that cache.

My rule is that if you can't be bothered to log them, then don't do big loops. It took me 3 hours to log a big loop once, but I knew that from the start, and I find the logging part fun. I think that one point of caching is to, as originally stated, "share your experiences online". That's why I like to put something different for each cache. So, if you can't be asked to do that for 20+ caches then don't go to find 20+ again.

I have suggested the idea of the CO being able to group their caches, so people can load them onto their GPS in one go, and if it is a good series, give the group a favourite point, rather than the last cache of the series.

There are logging tools other than GSAK out there, but probably not as good...

I said "publishing multiple logs is simple" not "publishing the same log multiple times is simple".

Yes, GSAK allows log templates but you can import your field notes from your GPS device and write your own words as well before publishing to GC.com

JimJinks : I shall give it a go sounds just like what we require. Many Thanks.

Griff :   Sometimes and after a long day and with a young family as well, you just do not get the time to spend hours at the laptop, it is easy to add just a few small comments. We do where possible add to these later, or if time is on our side we do prefer, as most do, write a more detailed account. One day, you may with a family of your own understand this.
Unlucky with your last one on the Welford walk, we almost did the same, but turned away from the hide at the last moment and found the ding dong first.

Ok, I never meant it like that, sorry  :o I have the same problem, and often (like you said) go back and add it later when I have more time. It is surprising how time consuming logging is...

Yes, I was unlucky with the "Who's best 10" - a shame as I knew where it was, finding the final box first - it was still a fun cache though, and very unique!

Or, Foraging 5, you could try this:

Geopt.org Geocaching Tools

"This application will revolutionize the way you manage the logs online, the pictures in your logs and trackable.
You can make your logs quickly and easily, upload photos automatically to logs you have done in a quick and convenient way, and manage trackable, giving you the option to do "discovers" and "retrieves" from the cache, to move for the collection and inventory several trackables at once."

Seems good too  :)
